You may wish to haunt a pawn shop or two. Some years ago I picked up a very nice (probably worth $500+) acoustic in a pawn shop in Bethesda for about $100. I later "sold" it to Breezy.
Yeah, that's another theory behind spending an afternoon trying out a few models - makes it easier to know what I'm looking for, and I can then proceed to scour eBay. Actual pawn shops are a good thought too, though the past few times I've spotted guitars in secondhand stores they've been no-names in poor condition.
I heartily recommend Chuck Levin's. It's a great place to check everything out and honestly they had really good deals, too. I bought from there even though I was living in PA at the time. I drove down and met up with a musical friend who helped me evaluate the ones I checked out (plus he'd tapped the brains of a bunch of guitarist friends on which ones hold up best and hold their value well, being a good value for the price).
That's good to know. I don't know where I got the impression (which may well be false!) that Chuck Levin's was sort of populated by music snobs. I was too intimidated as a beginner to go there. And, heck, I didn't know anything about guitars or what I should get, either. So I just found an inexpensive one on eBay and was off running.
I used to go all the time when I lived there to drool over the synthesizers (in a different building than guitars) and then came back and spent forever on all the starter-end guitars and they were really nice. And there just might have been a banana maraca purchase there, too. heh ;) I do love instruments.
