Child support is determined by a judge based on your yearly income as to what you can reasonably afford. Often, in custody disputes, the parent without custody is made to pay child support regardless of the personal situation with the other parent.
The idea of a trust fund is a good one, but it's detrimental to the parent left raising the child. Can they afford the baby and his or her care without that monthly bonus? Given that the custodial parent has the Canadian Child Tax Credit and baby bonus, it's not much of a stretch but it depends on the parent's original financial situation.
I think if you can afford to put the money away in a trust fund, why not split it in half- Half going away into savings, the other half available for the child if needed.
