Manga vs Anime, & Book vs Movie

Several members of my f'list have brought up anime in some way, CCS fanfic in particular, and my brain has been poked to spit out a recurring question. When manga canon and anime canon differ ( Read more... )

A lot of the time it's whichever one I read/watch first. But then I decide I like the other version and consider them seperate universes.

Separate canons for me, totally.

Usually, the manga canon supercedes the anime canon for me, but I think a few times I've blended them in small ways. Usually, I tend to stick the anime cards in the mangaverse - there's just more of them.

Hmm. I tend to use a blend of anime-manga or book-movie canon, if and only if I consider the two versions roughly equal in quality (defined as "I like it"). If, however, I deeply prefer one canon to the other, or it's not possible to combine the two (see Lord of the Rings for both problems), I pick the one I like and go with it.

I tend to canon-blend with CCS, since I like both anime and manga. I'll do the same with Narnia, since I really (I mean *really*) liked the new movie, and it can mesh well with the rest of the book series. Lord of the Rings and Rayearth, however, to take two examples, I just can't mesh, or don't want to.

Generally I use one canon and borrow from another, but don't exactly blend them. For example, in CCS fanfic, I'll use anime canon in almost everything (existence of Meiling, existence of Wei, existence of 52/53 Clow Cards), but maybe tweak something in (Fly not being capturable by Wind, for instance, or the identities of the reincarnation(s) of Clow Reed).

Deciding which canon I use depends on which one I like better, which one seems easier to write with, and most importantly which one I have ready access to at all times.
