Kyudo Club 1st meeting

Jun 18, 2005 17:58

We met Jan at the Cherry Blossom Festival this last spring, in the auditorium where demonstrations of Judo, carpentry, and kumihimo were being held. L had been doing kumihimo, Japanese braiding, since last summer, and that was a major reason why we were at the CBF to begin with. have you read Zen in the Art of Archery by Eugen Herrigel? this is the book that Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance got named after, subsequently spawning a legion of imitators. it (Herrigel's book) is good and not long - he was a german philosophy professor who went to japan for several years to teach, and decided to learn archery as a way of getting closer to zen (which was apparently considered unfathomable for foreigners back in the 1950s). if you're interested, and can't/don't track down a copy before august, let me know, and i'll bring mine.

And I still want to call him sensei.
of course. heck, if i'm speaking to guruji, i never call him guruji. (i call him "Jeff".) i don't even know if he knows that behind his back i almost invariably refer to him by title rather than name.

I second the suggestion of Zen in the Art of Archery. It was out of print last I heard, but doesn't L work in a used bookstore?

I wanted to go, but I've been sick. -_- I thought I was recovered, but Friday afternoon I felt like crap again. Hopefully next week? Also, I've got a copy of Zen in the Art of Archery that you and L can borrow.

That would be cool! (Both Counts) BTW, we're going to see Howl's Moving Castle at the Uptown tonight, 7pm show. If you don't have anything else going on and are okay with the dub, you could meet us (?).

We're doing a Father's Day dinner-at-home kinda thing tonight, but I'd like to hear what you think of the movie. Besides, I doubt my coughing and noseblowing would make a good accompaniment to the movie.
