An unscrupulous 1980s Conservative chief whip plots and schemes within a re-elected but weakened government. This is not really great literature: most of the characters are stereotypes rather than in any way rounded portrayals, and the writing felt a little pedestrian. I really quite liked his *other* series about an ordinary MP, which was less thriller-y. I read House and Cards, and enjoyed it, but didn't find it outstandingly memorable, and then lots of people said the TV series was a lot better.
