Alot of Catholic holidays were taken off Pagan holidays, yea. Christmas, for one! Also its interesting to note how often the Catholic church conformed to the people of the land to convert them. In parts of Europe you can find early paintings of Jesus, where Jesus looks strikingly similar to Zeus.

and isn't the current common idea of jesus, 'round these parts, reminiscent of some king somewhere? (laugh) i am very fuzzy, but it seems to me like some king was like "hey, people like pictures of jesus! court artist, make me a picture! and, ah, make him look like me while you're at it, by the way, because i'm a fucking rockstar." or something.

i read this book in a class i took while in high school, the class was called "philosophy of women in world cultures" and it was taught by this wonderfully flaming straight man (who had babies!) who went off perpetually about the history of christianity and how much it's changed over time... it made me respect christianity and jesus a lot more. i'm not sure if the book covers as much as we did in class, but there we learned a lot about where some of the adaptations of pagan holidays (is thought to have) came from, and all that jazz.

but yeah. so much religious imagery is so utterly pagan. ye gods. (laugh)
