It was a bad idea to bring Donghae, a terrible idea. His sense of duty and the urgency to help the other made him forget any common sense, and now both of them were facing a huge obstacle in their way.
Said obstacle was looking at them with a huge smile on her face.
“So… how you’ve been?”
Hyukjae groaned.
“Hyoyeon, don’t be a jerk, you know how I’ve been. I don’t doubt that Hangeng-hyung already told you everything in detail,” Hyoyeon’s smile widened, if possible, “And I advise you that you keep your mouth shut if you want to keep this place unnoticed to undesirable company.”
He only got a nod but he noticed that the girl’s smile wasn’t as wide as before.
“OK, you win this time, but only because this case also concerns me. That psycho is killing the business.” She let out an annoyed hiss directed to the door, “you’ll have to wait for me. As always your choice of visit hours suck, Hyukjae. I’ll be back as soon as possible.”
Before leaving them she turned to look directly at Hyukjae. “If you have anything you’re paying. No special treatment for anyone.” Hyoyeon
winked at Donghae and walked through a black curtain.
Hyukjae turned to look at Donghae who had a very interesting lost look on his face at that moment. It was understandable of course; Hyukjae didn’t explain anything to him. He always thought that Hyoyeon and everything that surrounded her had to be experienced.
“Cute girl…” was the first thing that came out from Donghae’s mouth after a few moments of uncomfortable silence. Hyukjae laughed. “I would appreciate an explanation now, Hyukjae, because really, I’m terribly confused now.”
“You’re always confused, Donghae.” He got a cold stare for that comment. “OK, OK, I’ll tell you a little about this place. We still have some time before Hyoyeon gets some free time, anyway.”
The name was “Soupir” and on the outside it looked like any coffee shop anyone has ever seen. It even had clients that every coffee shop had, nice people sitting and sipping all kinds of exotic brews that gave the place a relaxing aura.
The regular part stopped right there.
Hyukjae led them towards the back of the shop. The place was almost identical to the front part except for the colors and smells the beverages in there, emanated. Some of them had a very distinct smell of blood.
A tall girl with big eyes and a sweet smile approached them.
“Same table?” Hyukjae shook his head.
“A private table today, please.” The girl nodded and led them across the room, the other clients looked at Donghae with obvious interest.
“Stick close to me, you don’t want to get bitten.” The younger only nodded, and walked as quickly as possible.
The private tables on “Soupir” were separated from the others by silk curtains and were surrounded by a white circle. When they were led to an empty one, Hyukjae thanked the girl.
“I’ll tell Hyoyeon you’re here, please avoid breaking anything this time.” The girl left before Hyukjae could retort.
“Breaking anything?”
“Not my fault, vampires are terrible at taking a no for an answer.”
“Va… vampires? Like, blood sucking, fanged vampires?”
“Yes, those.”
“Are they real?”
Hyukjae had to laugh at that.
“You’re a werewolf, Donghae, why is it so hard to believe in vampires?” Donghae didn’t answer. “OK, let me explain to you why we’re here, what this place is, who Hyoyeon is and why did half of the people look at you like they wanted to eat you while the other half wanted to murder you.”
The tall girl appeared again with two cups of coffee, nodded at them and left without saying a word.
“Anyway,” continued Hyukjae while sipping his coffee and letting out a happy sigh. Those girls made the best coffee in the city. It was worth the risk of being bled to death only to have a sip of that glorious brew from time to time. “This is ‘Soupir’. You must have noticed their clients aren’t what you usually see,” Donghae nodded with his eyes wide open. “This is some sort of safe place for creatures like us. You would be amazed at how many non-humans or half-humans or whatever-humans live in the city. The ignorance of the humans is what keeps them safe, and places like ‘Soupir’ exist to give them at least a little space to be themselves.”
“How did you find this place?”
“Hangeng-hyung brought me when I pestered him enough; this is a perfect place to get information and contacts. Becoming a regular was a must for me when I inherited hyung’s job.” He saw Donghae’s face “I’ll talk to you about that later” he added quickly dismissing the subject.
Apparently Donghae understood because he kept his questions focused, “And the girls?”
“Hyoyeon is the actual owner. The tall girl is Sooyoung; she works in here with other girls. They’re some sort of pack that formed around ‘Soupir’, you could say.”
“A pack? They’re werewolves?”
“Did they smell like werewolves to you, Donghae?” Hyukjae sighed; the kid had a lot to learn about instinct if he wanted to survive outside the pack that adopted, well, if he wanted to be outside said pack, of course. He saw Donghae shaking his head.
“Their smell was… similar but it didn’t have the same feeling. It wasn’t really a comfortable feeling.”
“There you go, that’s what you feel when you are around beings like us, but different at the same time.”
“What?”
“Cats, Donghae, they are cats.”
“Cats?”
“Yes, cats. They turn to cats, well, panthers, jaguars, tigers, big cats. Anyway, you don’t want to be around them when that happens unless
they trust you, remember that.”
“Why?”
“We scratch. Badly,” came a sweet voice behind Donghae that jumped surprised.
“Don’t kill the boy, Hyoyeon, we’re trying to keep him alive. Remember?”
“I can’t help not moving like an elephant or like a dog” she smirked at Hyukjae’s scowl “we have more elegance and our steps have barely any sound. We can’t avoid startling some people, except you, of course. I’ve always wondered why’s that.”
“You don’t want to know.”
Hyoyeon smiled coldly.
“Of course I don’t. With you no one ever wants to know, right?” She sighed, “Well, I would love to test who will end up trying to kill the other sooner but I’m sure you’re in a hurry and I have a business to run.”
“Speaking about business,” said Hyukjae, “why is this so important to you? You’ve never given me information willingly and you’re not particularly fond of my kind.”
Hyoyeon kept quiet for a second. Sooyoung appeared again with a second cup of coffee for Donghae and Hyukjae and cup of tea for Hyoyeon. Donghae looked with curiosity at the girl.
“Sooyoung is a special one, you know. She always knows what clients need. We think she has some sort of mind reading ability, but she doesn’t want to tell us.”
“Is that also real?” asked Donghae, amazed and a little bewildered at the amount of revelations he was having in so short amount of time.
“Regular humans also have special abilities, lifting stuff with their minds, even reading thoughts. It’s not unheard of,” Hyoyeon looked at Hyukjae smiling, “your puppy really has some believing issues.”
“I’m not ‘his puppy,’” said Donghae quickly. Hyukjae groaned; Hyoyeon’s smile was positively wicked.
“Oh really?”
“Work, murder, werewolves, psycho, business, remember?” said Hyukjae urgently before the conversation could get worse.
“OK, OK,” said the feline girl looking at Hyukjae with an expression that clearly said it wasn’t over yet. “I called you because last week I got the weirdest visit. You know that not many like you, come to ‘Soupir’. The little puppy in here would be… well the third werewolf that comes to drink my coffee.” Hyoyeon smiled sweetly at Donghae.
“Wait, if you say third that means that last week it wasn’t a werewolf, right?”
“I’m not sure. I understand that you sensed the last attack towards a human from that… that thing,” Hyoyeon looked almost disgusted while talking about it.
“Yeah, but I’m quite sure he wanted me, or someone to feel it. I was never able to feel any of the other attacks, and I know some were close to my old flat.” Hyukjae frowned, “Did he attack again?” Hyoyeon nodded gravely.
“Three nights ago actually, you see, as much as I am quite neutral in whatever happens in this city, when someone is dumped on my doorstep I find it hard not to think of it as personal.”
“Your… what?”
“Well, we found him in the morning. It was a mess, we didn’t want any police involved and regular medicine would do no good to a throat that damaged. It was clear that it was that guy you’re looking for, but it was strange, Hyukjae, the bite, it was aimed to turn him. I could feel the wolf’s energy in it, but on the other side that poor boy was terribly wounded. It wasn’t only the bite, his face was destroyed, we tried to do what we could, but…”
“He died…” Hyoyeon nodded, “It’s weird. The attack before that was relatively quick. I sensed that guy’s dead.’ It came quickly, why would he prolong it this time if he wasn’t aiming for a shift?”
He looked at Hyoyeon, “Why did he dump him here?” Hyoyeon kept quiet for a while before taking an old picture out of her pocket and handing it to Hyukjae.
The boy in the photo had a bright smile, big brown eyes, dark brown hair and looked exactly like Donghae would look if he used clothes three centuries old.
“What the…”
“It actually explains a lot” said Hyoyeon slowly. “It’s an unexpected turn because you know, fighting a psychopath is a thing but…”
“Wait, are you telling me that there is a chance that the guy that’s doing this, is actually as old as this picture?” Hyoyeon nodded, “That’s… that’s…”
“He imprinted his memory in that poor boy, Hyukjae, I saw it. He’s been looking for that boy.” She said pointing at the picture, “for centuries. I don’t know why or if he’s been killing since then, but he thinks that Donghae’s the one. You have to admit that they could be the same person.”
“Imprinted his memory?” asked Donghae quietly. Hyukjae had to admire how brave the younger being was after the mountain of terrible revelations. That could also mean that he had no idea of the danger he was facing.
“It’s believed that creatures like us have some sort of… you may call it magic. We make energy and emotions flow easily from us to others. Of course that works better with specific people, but the point is that we can share and show certain things, it’s kind of how you can feel that Hyukjae would be breaking my table right now if he didn’t know better. Imprinting memories works a little like that, mostly because strong memories are linked to strong feelings. It is still something that no one should be able to do.”
“Unless you had more than three hundred years,” muttered Hyukjae.
The situation was getting out of hand. He would never, not even in his wildest dream, imagine that he would be facing such a terrible opponent. Obsession was dangerous, and tied to a powerful creature, even worse. He had to act quickly.
He was terribly good at that.
“I need you to find the oldest vampire in town.” Hyoyeon looked at him like he had grown horns “Oh don’t look at me like that. You serve those disgusting things all day, it couldn’t be hard for you to get me that information”
“Of course, but you despise them, and they aren’t very fond of you either, if you forgot.”
“Doesn’t matter,” he said stubbornly.
“OK, OK, there’s no stopping you when that stupid expression gets on your face. I’ll call you soon. Anything else?” Hyukjae shook his head,
“OK then, why don’t you just stay here for a while? Try to relax. I’m not sure how it works in a pack of wolves but that stress would get you killed with my people.” She winked at them both, “I’ll get you some food and some more coffee.”
“You just want to take more of my money, you greedy cat,” said Hyukjae. His smile and the way he relaxed on the chair proved that he wasn’t averse to staying for a while, though.
“Of course I do,” said Hyoyeon, smiling before leaving them alone again.
Donghae finally cracked.
“Am I going to die?”
“I’m working in impeding that,” said Hyukjae trying to stay calm for his sake and for the younger too.
“Why the vampire?”
“No need to know yet.”
“What?! It’s my life we’re talking about, Hyukjae. I have the right to know.”
There was anger, and pain, and fear in Donghae’s voice. It was understandable, of course. Hyukjae was still trying to process the
information. He couldn’t imagine what the younger was going through right now.
“You have no other choice but to trust me with this, Donghae.” It was a hard request for the other to accept, Hyukjae knew that, but he hoped that Donghae could do it and could believe in what his instincts told him. When he saw a nod, he sighed, relieved. “I promise I’ll explain soon, but right now my thought must be kept only my head.” They kept quiet for a long time, just staring at each other, Donghae apparently found whatever he was looking in Hyukjae's expression because he nodded.
“OK, I’ll trust you, it’s the only thing I can do now, anyway.” Hyukjae, ignoring his common sense, (a thing he found himself doing quite regularly on Donghae’s presence) took the other’s hand and pulled him towards his body in a tight embrace. The sudden wave of desire for his mate blinded him for a few seconds but he ignored it focusing only in support Donghae.
“You know I won’t lie to you. I don’t know what will happen next, but I will do my best. Trust me in that one at least, OK?” Donghae laughed a little and relaxed. When the hug ended they looked more tranquil. The fear was still there, but there was some positivism showing.
“Well, whatever happens, you’re still lame, so I can still laugh at your teddy bear underwear, if things get bad.”
“Hey! I already established that I don’t have teddy bear underwear. I have strawberries, Dragon Balls, smilies, cats, dogs…”
“OK, OK I get it, you’re a dork who doesn’t like teddy bears.”
Donghae got a punch on the arm as a response.
Hyukjae laughed.
The photograph lay forgotten on the floor.
