Boss Lau had hard eyes that accompanied a hard attitude, the man had the “old intimidating mafia boss” look perfected and -while he scanned Donghae with his cold dark eyes- the younger could almost feel how close he was to be murdered by one of the Boss’ men, two of them were standing at each side of the man’s chair while other pair guarded the door of the office in which Donghae was at that moment trying really hard to not squirm in his small chair while the Boss’ looked at him across his (very expensive looking and huge) desk.
Donghae noticed that Eunhyuk wasn’t there, not that he was completely certain of how the other looked like; the trauma of being shot on the leg made his memories of the few moments before it slightly blurry, and after that he was too drugged to even remember his own face, but he was sure he could be able to recognize
Eunhyuk would he be in the room.
Boss Lau’s voice stabbed through his thoughts like a knife made of ice.
“I am really sorry about the way Eunhyuk… invited you here.” Weren’t
Donghae terrified of the man he would have laughed and questioned the conception of invitation he had “You must understand we weren’t sure if you would come willingly and friendly persuasion isn’t the forte of my men.” The old man was giving him a warm smile which, opposite to making Donghae feel comfortable, made him shiver. “Also Yesung, the guy in charge of the sedatives, has a tendency of overdoing himself, for good and for bad.” A grim smile appeared in the Boss’ face making Donghae feel thankful for being alive and awake. “I wanted to talk to you earlier but I’ve been told to wait for you to get better… coffee?”
Donghae wasn’t sure if it was a good idea to accept, given the fact that this was the guy that ordered his kidnapping, but it was dangerous to say no, this could be a test, and if his career as a detective taught him something, was that challenging mafia bosses with blatant mistrust was never a good idea.
He nodded.
While one of the gorilla men served them coffee (Donghae had to focus hard on being terrified to avoid laughing at the sight) Boss Lau started to talk “I’m sure you must wonder why you’ve been brought here.”
“The thought has crossed my mind, yeah” Donghae flinched at his own words. The older man just smiled.
“You must know, Lee Donghae, that we know everything about you, where do you live, obviously where do you work, the people you meet, your friends, your contacts, we had to do some sort of detective work to get, ironically, a detective, but we like to play safe, I’m sure you would like to play safe too, mister Lee, so keep in mind how much we know before you give me your answer, are we clear?”
Blackmail, he wasn’t shocked about it, that didn’t make him hate it any less “Perfectly clear.”
“Fantastic.” Replied Boss Lau in his always business tone
“Investigating you, of course, wasn’t only about having some sort of… guaranty, for you to cooperate with us” Donghae grimaced, he would use cooperation instead of disgusting blackmail as a definition of what was going on in there “we also needed to know if you were useful. You see, Mr. Lee, the profile of the detective that we needed was very specific, a young guy, just going independent and opening his own office, hence still with few if any contacts in the legal and illegal world, but with at least some potential.”
“And you think I fit the criteria.”
“Oh, my dear boy, you do fit the criteria perfectly.”
Seeing that Boss Lau wouldn’t say more about the subject Donghae decided to move to his next concern “And what am I needed for?”
“You see, my son just started school, he’s a really bright boy, loves music and wants a violin for his next birthday…” Boss Lau’s voice had a hard angry edge while talking about his son; Donghae started to worry “Last week, while going to school someone tricked my security -by tricked I mean murdered- and took my boy with them.”
A kidnapping, Donghae felt more at home, even if a little boy was the victim, he have dealt with kidnappers before. Once “Have they contacted you?”
“They called once, their demands are a little… how can I say it, impossible to comply.” Donghae waited for Boss Lau’s to continue
“The demands aren’t of your concern, Mr. Lee.” added finally the old man “at least not yet.”
Noticing that he wasn’t going to know more even if he asked, the young detective opted to play along “So what’s my part in all of this?” Boss Lau smiled at Donghae, the last noticed that the smile had never reached, not even once, the old man’s eyes.
“I need you to find the kidnappers and my son; especially my son.”
“And when I find the guys that have your son…”
Boss Lau’s smile turned positively dangerous.
“You don’t worry about that.”
OoOoOoOoOoOoO
Of course Donghae accepted the work; a kid’s life was in stake. He would never risk a life, much less a young one.
Also his entire life was threatened if he didn’t accept.
Also there was a lot of money for him.
But the kid was the main reason.
After a few more minutes of talk in which Boss Lau informed
Donghae that he would be living in there (wherever there was,
Donghae had no idea and didn’t dare to ask), that he didn’t need to worry about money, his office or his apartment in the city, all of that will be taken care of (he hope that taken care of didn’t mean destroyed), and that his personal stuff, would be moved to his new home that same night (he didn’t dare to ask either.), Donghae was finally freed from the Boss’ intimidating presence.
He wasn’t escorted back to the room where he’d been at, he was actually left pretty much alone without knowing what to do, where he was or even what time it was; but even if completely lost, there wasn't anything that would make him get back to that office and ask for directions.
After the initial shock of the reality he had to suddenly face dimmed, he looked at his surroundings. Right now he was standing in the middle of a long hallway, which he recognized immediately; the fleur de lys pattern on the floor was enough for him to conclude that he was in a hotel, and not in any hotel, but in Héraldique, the infamous super expensive project that was a major economic wreck only a few weeks after its opening. The owners had to declare bankruptcy after investing into a huge project that wasn’t meant to work in a city where all the main mafias already owned most of the hotel business to begin with.
Donghae got to see Héraldique once before, he was there to check on some possible lead, and as a good detective, he decided to take his sweet time touring the place under the excuse of investigative work.
The shocking thing about the just inaugurated Héraldique of back then and the abandoned Héraldique of right now was the lack of change. Everything was as beautiful and elegant as Donghae remembered; even the tiles looked like they were just cleaned.
Since part of his detective work required a good memory, Donghae could remember almost every detail of the place (maybe the real reason was that he fell in love with Héraldique on his first visit and decided to learn every detail of it considering its impending doom, but who was asking); it wasn’t difficult to locate himself at the outer part of the hotel, were the conference rooms and offices were located, being in an adjacent building that seemed like a part of the structure of the hotel made the area closer to the lobby and the attentions towards important persons in there was more efficient.
It also meant that they weren’t in the penthouse or a similar high floor; that apparently was offensive to rich people, who decided that it was a valid reason to close the hotel (maybe also some mafia intervention was mixed in the deal). Such was the official story of the failure that was Héraldique. Being in there, Donghae decided to reconsider the reason.
The lobby of the hotel was almost intact except for the creepy feeling of loneliness that a place that was meant to be populated had when it was completely empty, there, Donghae finally noticed that the place had been abandoned for a while, or at least not taken care of properly; the paint of the walls was starting to decay, there was powder on the unused furniture and cobwebs were starting to form on the higher places that the people living in there (if there was any) never bothered to clean.
Nonetheless he was sure that someone had to live somewhere in the huge structure, the office where he had his meeting with Boss Lau couldn’t be the only place that was taken care of, and since he was asked (the word “ordered” wasn’t of his liking) to stay in there, he was sure he wouldn’t be left alone. Not as a thing of courtesy, of course, but as sing of mistrust. At that point Donghae didn’t care, any company would be better than staying in a creepy abandoned hotel (and every abandoned hotel was creepy in Donghae’s book) alone.
He almost has a heart attack when his cellphone started to ring.
His ringtone had been changed.
The screen read “unknown number” but Donghae already suspected that the only ones with access to his phone where the people involved in the job, he answered faking indifference.
“You are quite the actor, you know, I saw you almost having a stroke when your phone ringed, it was really funny, Donghae.” He remembered that voice; it made him annoyed and gave him the sudden urge to reach for his gun, which was still taken.
“Eunhyuk?”
“I saw that twitch too, Donghae, you’ll have to learn to behave if you want your gun, or any gun for that matter. I can’t work with someone that wants to kill me… with the possibility of success, of course.” The cocky smile on Eunhyuk’s face could be heard from the other side of the line. “OK, Donghae, this is a little test to see your worth; I want you to tell me where am I, and since I’m a really nice guy, I’ll give you a clue; there are no cameras working in this place.”
“And if I don’t want to?”
“Well, you’re free to do as you want, but you see, mister detective, if you want to have a nice working life with this group, I advise you to have me as your friend.” Donghae shivered at the tone that suddenly had taken over the other’s voice, he didn’t expect such cold amusement, it was almost like Eunhyuk was changeling him to try to be an enemy and keep his lungs in place at the same time.
He rather liked his inner organs where they were, thank you very much.
He looked around for five minutes before talking again “I’m not going to ask how you got there, but based on how easy you could see my reflex to get my gun, I’ll say you’re on the top of the scaffold that’s on my left.” The delighted giggle that he heard after that was both disturbing and… well it was plain disturbing.
“Well done! I knew you were smart.”
“I’m a detective, you know.” Eunhyuk giggled again and Donghae felt like running away.
“Yeah well, I’ve met really stupid detectives, so you weren’t safe of being an idiot.” After some metallic sounds that were very close to the sound of a structure collapsing, a red head appeared on the highest part of the old rusted scaffold. Donghae imagined fifteen different scenarios in which Eunhyuk could die over there before any of them could talk.
“Why are you up there?” Was the only thing that came out of his mouth, because, really, the idiot was on a fucking scaffold that was so close to collapsing, that Donghae only had to touch for any of his death scenarios to come true.
“To look at you from a higher point of view, of course, I like to know who my partner is before working with him.”
“I thought you guys already knew everything about me” said Donghae without containing the bitterness in his voice.
“Oh yes, we do know everything about your life, your family, your friends, your routine, by the way, we eat the same brand of cookies so we won’t have problems there.” Eunhyuk said it like it wasn’t a big deal, like the complete and utter violation of his private life was nothing more than a work requirement such as a signature of a contract. “I actually don’t care much about that, you know. That barely tells me anything about what I need to know. That thing about being creepy about your personal life is more Yesung’s thing I guess, but I think he’ll blame someone else. The thing is; I don’t give a fuck about which brand of underwear you buy or if you go out with your friends every Saturday night even if you have a ton of work because you don’t want them to feel like you don’t care enough.” After some more sound and dangerous shakes of the metallic structure, Eunhyuk was in front of Donghae.
Eunhyuk wasn’t actually ugly or regular looking, like he suspected on their first exchange.
He was a handsome guy, with a friendly and open expression, that disturbed Donghae terribly.
“How did you get down here so quickly?” He still wasn’t willing to go into deep discussion without knowing where he was standing with Eunhyuk.
“Oh, it’s easy, I’m good at that type of stuff, you know; it’s part of the job.”Donghae felt the other’s eyes scanning him slowly “You know, you’re my age, well a little younger, but mainly my age, I’ve never worked with anyone my age.”
“You said you didn’t care about my life and the stuff I do…”
“I did...” Eunhyuk nodded absentmindedly while cleaning some of the power that got on his grey suit. No gun, Donghae noticed “You better don’t think about it, I don’t need a gun to feed you your own legs, you know” Donghae gulped and nodded; now he knew where he was with Eunhyuk; at complete disadvantage.
And then Eunhyuk laughed.
“Oh, I’m just kidding! I wouldn’t do that, I don’t like gross stuff, and the Boss would get really angry if I dared to touch you. Anyways, as I was saying” he added with a friendly smile directed at Donghae “I just care if you can work with me, everything else is useless.”
“And I can?” Eunhyuk laughed again at that. “Gums” was the first word that crossed Donghae’s mind.
“I’ll show you your room, Donghae.” He said simply while walking toward the elegant stairs that led to the rooms starting on the second floor of the hotel. “Oh” he added as an afterthought “If I considered you couldn’t work with me, you would have a bullet in your skull since this morning.”
Donghae sighed. “I suspected as much.”
