I think it's easy to underestimate the biasing power of relationships on perceptions when we're not actually in them. I didn't find it *that* unreasonable.
My impression was that Stottlemeyer *did* find the (preposterous) idea of Monk coming on to her highly suspicious, and acted accordingly. And his pained look, to me, was just pained - yes, he owed Monk an enormous apology, but...he's 51 years old! It's the last chance he's got!
you could be right. I saw it a few days ago, and much has happened since. (I'm generally pretty sensitive to realism issues, though, and my threshhold wasn't crossed.)

Dunno, there seemed to be an air of "here we go again" when he saw Monk on the webcam. He didn't start "thinking" until he heard the ukelele music.
