The Charlie Chaplin movie City Lights has as a plot element a millionaire who is The Tramp's best friend when he's drunk, and doesn't know him at all. At one point, the drunk millionaire is driving, and clearly extremely drunk, and is veering wildly all over the road. The Tramp finally can't take it any more, and says to him "Be careful how you're driving". The Millionaire responds "Am I driving?" So this cab-driver-drunk idea goes back at least to 1931!
