Severely depressing movies

I forget how this subject came up yesterday, or what the other person's suggestion was, but the first thing that popped to my mind (which I thought blew his example away) are Jean de Florette and Manon of the Spring (Manon des Sources) which are available on a single disc from Netflix ( Read more... )

Wall-E. An extremely productive robot has a whole planet to himself, but through a series of mishaps ends up having to live with a whole bunch of humans.

I guess I'll have to watch my copy then, but I have trouble believing a movie marketed at kids/families will be so starkly pathos-ridden...

Ones that I've seen:

Requiem for a dream
Revolutionary road
Night of the living dead
Of mice and men
The road (I couldn't finish it)

Dishonorable mention to "The mist" for it's gut wrenching ending.

The Road. I hated the book and really can't understand how/why it won a Pulitzer.

OK, I'm a sicko. The end of the Mist made me chuckle. No actual people were killed in the making of this movie.

Yeah, it was so grossly over the top in terms of it's plot device abuse that I groaned audibly.

The Basketball Diaries
Gallipoli
Trainspotting
Deer Hunter
On some levels, Saving Private Ryan

See, I've seen Trainspotting and Saving Private Ryan and don't remember them being so utterly, despondently sad on the level that I'm thinking of.

Really, Netflix?!!?! I added that disc, having not seen those before. As usual, Netflix recommends "more like this..." Lots of other French movies, great cinema, etc. And "Twins" (with Ahhhnold and Devito.) Ok, then.

(I agree with many of the choices, but I don't find Leaving Las Vegas that depressing. Tragic, yes, but almost uplifting. He does what he set out to do, and had good reasons for it. I'm weird though.)
