I've decided I want to do the Grand Canyon rim-to-rim hike* next year for my birthday. I'm not sure it's something I'd want to attempt today, but this gives me a year to work up to it :-)
So a bunch of us have been vigorously discussing/planning in email (they will start accepting reservations this Saturday 10/1 for South Rim lodging for October 2012), and this morning I see this in Yahoo news and wonder if it's an omen:
Hiker Spends 4 Days Crawling to Safety A North Carolina man is recovering at home after spending four days in the Utah desert trying to crawl to safety with a broken leg.
[...]
Richards was hiking in the same canyon where Aron Ralston was trapped by a boulder and forced to cut off his own arm to free himself. Richards says he saw the movie "127 Hours" based on Ralston's story, and that's what inspired him to hike into Little Blue Canyon.
Yeah, we'll be doing our best not to follow in this guy's footsteps (or drag ourselves through his ruts as the case may be).
*overnighting at Phantom Ranch. I'm not
insane, or
ludicrously insane. Yet.
