With the development of science in the Age of Enlightenment, many people came to doubt beliefs that were based solely on tradition or faith. In response, the French mathematician and philosopher Blaise Pascal argued that reason required religious belief. Pascal explained that because the existence of God cannot be ascertained, it is wiser to believe that God does exist.
