So, about that 2011 music

Dec 30, 2011 23:56

All right... I think it's about time for me to do my Best Albums of the Year post, right? I've had a bit of trouble with this, actually, because while last year there were at least two albums that I wanted to tuck under my pillow and keep with me forever, that kind of hasn't happened this year. Or, when it has, it only lasted for a couple of ( Read more... )

yeah i'm probably a hipster, music

You still don't have Cut Copy? :( I think Zonoscope is one of my favorite albums of the year, but I am terrible at deciding such things: hence, no "music year in review" post from me.

I pretty agreed with you 95% on all of your "The Mainstays" reviews. A lot of bands I love put out albums, and yet: well, I keep forgetting that they did. Doesn't bode well!

Aww, your Bon Iver hate wasn't that bad! I was expecting you to go for the throat! Surely, there is more to be said about him and his mellow, scruff-ball, bearded ways? Or does it hit too close to home, hipster?! :P Ah, BOOOM!

Yeah, I pretty much agree about him, though: I can't understand half of his lyrics, and I frequently forget that I'm listening to his album when it's on. But some of his songs are just pretty! Like "Skinny Love".

Ok, need to sit down and properly investigate your new kid favorites! When I have time. *sound of laughter in the distance* Yep. :D

I still don't have Cut Copy... it's been sitting in my "Saved for Later" list on emusic for ages now, but I keep putting it aside because there's a hole in my indie-folk heart that hasn't been filled yet this year and I've been holding out so I have enough credits in case that mythical album appears. Since it's the 31st, though, and Zonoscope keeps turning up on people's Best Of lists, I should probably take care of that ( ... )

I bought Yellow Ostrich's album, and I like. :) I am terrible when it comes to talking about the technical aspects of music, but it was the layered vocals on "Whale" that sold me on him.

Yeah, The Head and the Heart: NSM. They just never really stood out for me.

I'll give myself a day or two to digest, then come back for Braids. :)

Yay! Glad you like Yellow Ostrich. I didn't see him show up much on people's end-of-year lists, but the album totally deserves the attention.

Braids may end up being a toss-up. You remember my hipster dithering on it. It was Plath Heart that got me properly hooked on the album, but the whole thing is kind of this sort of in-between pop-atmospheric. I think I like it for the unusualness of that. (-; Let me know what you think if you do end up getting it.

(Also, boo, LJ not sending me comment notifications.)

I have nothing intelligent to say, but I do adore knowing people who are so put-together and connoisseur-like about their interests. Go you. ;D

Aw, thanks! Music is one of the few things I pay enough attention to all year to be able to do this with. (-:

Oh no, "Calamity Song" is defnitely a massive David Foster Wallace reference, it's been confirmed. As is the video. ...Suppose at some point I should actually read Infinite Jest, by all accounts it would be right up my alley.

This is what I get for not following up on my suspicions. Of course the video is a recreation of the Eschaton scene.

You should read it! It's... difficult, and it took me most of a summer to read it, but once you get the hang of the style and give up on trying to understand everything it's awesome and hilarious and completely, completely strange.
