To people who read THE BOOK and were not expecting Johnny Depp to be Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka, Johnny Depp's performance was absolutely great.

Johnny Depp was way way closer to the book's Willy Wonka than Gene Wilder was.

That's not to say I don't appreciate a certain degree of freedom and creativity on the actor's part, or that I don't enjoy Gene Wilder's performance, but I find most often the people who criticise Johnny do so because they were expecting a more Gene Wilder Willy Wonka, which is just not appropriate.

I'll keep that in mind should I ever see his version of it. This version, however, was exceptionally horrific and bad. It was bad. very very bad!!!!

Word.
Seriously, the movie followed the original book pretty closely. They left out a couple of things (Square Candies that look Round), put in a few extra bits (all the stuff with his dad), and changed the ending (book left room for a sequel).

Depp did a fantastic job portraying the character. The Book version was not a pleasant guy and he was very childlike. Gene Wilder's portrayal was that of a sarcastic adult.

To compare the two doesn't do either of them justice because they are both good in their own right. As a fan of the book, I think Depp's movie is a lot better. Plus I really, Really, REALLY hate that goddamned Candyman song.
