I think your cats are better behaved than Travis and the doxie/doxie mix. This neighborhood is surrounded by lakes and trees. It's juicy with squirrels and chipmunks and birds and shrews. I could fence off part of the yard from the dogs but Travis is impossible to control, other then to cut his feet off or lock him in the basement.
Our cats are mostly lazy/lovey, though there are a few less-human-social more-hunter types among them. We're in the woods and a few minutes from the lake, but we only occasionally see dead critters in the driveway.
We used an owl thingy to keep the birds out of our garden in AZ. It worked. You just have to move it every few days. I don't think it will work for us here. There are native owls, but they are smaller and the birds attack my garden while I'm out watering it, so I don't think they are going to care about a plastic owl much. Our birds have balls.

Don't worry, they'll cull the local population -long- before that. :)
Our cats have only managed to collect a few shrews and tiny snakes--one worm snake, one black snake.
