So busy

I did so many things since the last time I posted. I finished my paper (woo!) and I think it came out pretty well (double woo!) Then, on Monday, I had two prospective freshmen (PFs) who I found through the LJ group for my college come to stay. They were pretty much awesome. I had to laugh when I heard the other week that Nalgene bottles were now the rage in California and other trendy places. We Boy Scouts have been doing it for years. :-) It does seem crazy the amount of money people pay for bottled water. I see folks buying it by the case all the time. Good for you for doing this!!!

Ooh, Mrs. Beeton's! I had a British boyfriend once who was *scandalized* that I'd never heard of Mrs. Beeton, the goddess, the myth, the legend, so he got a copy from somwhere. What I remember is "first truss your goose" . . . and the detailed instructions for the TWO DIFFERENT MENUS that you serve to the two ends of the table when you throw a REALLY LARGE dinner party. Yowza.

Apparently there are like a million editions of Mrs. Beeton's Guide to Household Management, but we read the first edition, with all the things about recipes for bootblack and furniture polish and how many servants (and which servants) to engage if one's income is between 200 and 300 pounds per annum.

You can most definitely tell the difference between bottled and tap in Philly. Back in Boston, our tap water was so good that I used to not understand why anyone would buy bottled, but that changed when I went to college. Our tap water is so disgusting that the city has promised to do something about it. (Doesn't mean they will, but at least people are unanimous that it's awful.) People who drink tap here generally filter it themselves, which, after all, is what the Aquafina people do.
