Pool Party

Robert helped Alan shake out the sheet and drape it over the sofa. They stood in the middle of the living room, looking around at all the covered furniture. They were both exhausted, not being able to sleep and instead staying up the most of the night talking quietly, finally giving up on sleep and watching the sunrise. He leaned against Alan, but neither spoke, lost in their own thoughts and memories. An arm snaked around his waist. "One last walk outside?" Alan asked him.

"Yeah. I'd like that."

The day was warm, but cloudy with a pleasant wind that ruffled through their hair. They picked their way down to the ocean, stopping to stare at the rolling waves, arms still wrapped around each other.

"Let's build a sand house and stay here forever," Robert whispered without thinking, surprised when he didn't hear Alan laughing. He tried to catch Alan's expression, but his face was turned away into the breeze.

Even though they were still going to be spending the best part of a week together once they landed back in London, they were still saying goodbye, in a sense. Saying goodbye to the safe world where just they exist. Alan liked it here, he had Robert--relativity distraction free--and they only needed to focus on each other, not the myriad of commitments that they both had in the ‘real world’. Alan blinked his eyes and stopped the tears that threatened to spill, remembering how safe and warm he felt, right here right now, on a deserted beach on an overcast day in Portugal. He wanted this moment again and again. "That sounds perfect." Alan tilted his head back and kissed Robert's jaw, a smile on his lips that hid the sadness that he felt acutely.

Robert turned his head to press his lips to Alan's before this moment was gone. His lips landed on Alan's cheek instead and he tasted salt. He leaned in, breathing deeply, and tried to think of something to say that would take the sting and sadness out of the morning. The last two weeks had been relaxing and wonderful, but he knew they had to face the reality of their lives and today was the day. He ran his hand down lower and squeezed Alan's right ass cheek. "Race you back." Not waiting for a response, Robert ran off, stumbling slightly as he hurried back up the hill.

Alan turned and watched Robert run away up the small incline towards the road, a real smile creeping up his face as he took off after. They both reached the door at about the same time, and Robert noted the daily jogs had done them both well. He laughed as he felt Alan's arms wrap around him as they both reached for the door, getting it open at the same time and falling into the house, landing on the floor in a heap. "I love you." Alan ran his hands across Robert's face and looked into his eyes, perfectly content to stay on the floor, sprawled half on, half off his boyfriend.

Robert took a few deep calming breaths and his face broke into a smile as Alan gently touched his face. He closed his eyes and leaned up towards the touch, then lazily stretched out his legs and tangled them with Alan's, opening his eyes again and smiling hopefully.

"Oh no you don't," Alan laughed, moving his hands to Robert's shoulders, but not pushing away. "We need to leave in..." he craned his head backwards to catch a glimpse of the wall clock. "...15 minutes if we want to have enough time to catch our flight."

Robert groaned and pulled Alan in for a kiss before reluctantly releasing him. They slowly stood, and Robert was almost relieved they hadn't tried any fooling around on the hard floor. He could wait until they got back to Alan's flat and his soft bed.

10 minutes later, they had all their bags moved over by the door. "We'll come back," Alan was saying as they took one last look. He sighed softly before grabbing one of the the bags.

"We'd better," Robert whispered, as if afraid to break some sort of spell.

"You ready?"

Robert looked at Alan and thought that that was a loaded question. He was sure that Alan wanted him to be ready for things that he wasn't. He was ready to leave this paradise and return to London, but he was not ready to give Alan the commitment he thought Alan was craving. He felt bad about it, but it was too soon. Especially after their fight that nearly tore them apart. Robert shook his head to clear out the negative thoughts and turned and gave Alan a crooked smile, then opened the door, leading the way out.

Alan followed, looping his arm around Robert's waist. He closed the heavy door on their time in Portugal, leaving behind them the sun, their cave, and the wickedly cool shower, but taking every memory they could store away with them. Safely.

Here ends Story 14.
