Giving Up, Giving In Lisa tapped on the trailer door. She flipped through the first draft copy of the next episode script as she waited for Hugh to answer. He greeted her at the door a few seconds later with a raised eyebrow and motioned her in with a sweep of his hand.
Hugh stuck his head out the door and looked both directions before closing it and turning. “Whew. I don’t think you were spotted,” he said dramatically in his House-voice, already in character for the day’s filming.
“Just got next week’s script,” she began with out preamble. “See page 10,” she handed hers over and followed Hugh to a pair of chairs.
Hugh gave her a sideways glance as he sat, raising his eyebrows at her amusing tizzy. Flipping to the indicated page with a mental shrug, he started to read. He bit his lip. He turned the page. He started to smile. Then chuckle before the pages were snatched away from him. “Good lord,” he exclaimed, pinching tears away from the corners of his eyes. “And you’re objecting?”
“Yes.”
“You get to wear black leather, knee high boots, and probably, hopefully, a whip. Please let there be a whip,” he prayed to the ceiling.
Lisa smacked him with the script. “You are an example of why I don’t want to.”
“Sorry, already taken.” He smiled, leaning back and closing his eyes.
“You look tired. Long night?” They had yet to visit the makeup trailers, so the tell-tale signs were still there.
“I was out drinking. With Robert.”
Lisa put her frustration with the script out of her mind. “Is he okay?”
“I think he will be. But I ended up more sloshed than he did. I wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t even get a buzz.” He shot an accusing look at Lisa. “Something about you getting him so drunk he passed out?” Hugh crossed his arms and motioned for her to speak up.
“It was just after the phone call. I decided to help him get his mind off things.”
“Never be able to get him to fall for that trick again. Please tell me he told you some juicy secrets?”
“All we talked about was Alan. I let him ramble. Not sure if anything would be considered juicy, but he was in a lot of pain.”
“So, what happened? It was more then the picture right?”
“Yes, the picture was more like the last straw.”
“I figured so. Alan has a temper, but that seemed a little hair triggered even for him.”
“It was I guess, if I understood him correctly. I did practically pour a bottle of wine down his throat. It was the same reason Gabby broke up with him. Alan just ran out of patience quicker.”
Hugh sat back on his small couch and leaned back, watching Lisa sit across from him. “Alan must not be the right person.”
“Hugh, you can’t believe that! You remember last fall? They were very smitten with each other. We both laughed at how hard they tried to keep things quiet. You know they have, or had, something. Question is, does Robert really know what he did, and will Alan listen?”
“They both can be pretty stubborn, and Robert tends to worry about everything.”
Lisa fiddled with her script, finally setting it down. “What can we do?”
“I don’t think there really is anything either of us can do…”
“You know Stephen Fry, right?”
“Eh, yeah…” Hugh was caught off guard by the rapid question.
“Have him beat some sense into Alan.”
“He asked me not to.”
Lisa sighed with a small growl, getting tired of all the frustrations thrown at her so early in the day.
There was a loud knock on the trailer. "Hugh, time for makeup."
Hugh stood up and glanced at Lisa on his way out. "Your legs will look much better in stiletto boots than mine would."
Lisa tossed the script at his head as he ducked out of the trailer.
A half hour later:
“The script was a fake? Hugh!” She was yelling good-naturedly and trying to get a clear shot so she could throw a muffin at her tormentor. Several cast and crew members were watching, standing well out of the way.
Hugh caught a glimpse of Robert out of the corner of his eye, amused smile on his lips. Another victory. He ducked the muffin and dashed off before Lisa could find anything else to throw.
