Keep in Touch Robert scanned the crowd trying to get a glimpse of Ethan, the star director, before it was time for the movie to start. He hadn’t really wanted to go see his friend’s new movie, but he couldn’t turn down a free ticket. He had called Alan earlier that morning and left a voice message, apologizing for falling asleep during their conversation the night before. He felt just awful about it.
He was just starting to turn around when he was playfully pounced upon. By someone who definitely wasn’t Ethan, though Ethan had been known to pounce on him from time to time. “Kat, hi! I didn’t know that you were going to be here!” He gave her a hug. He turned back to glance once more at the crowd. “Haven’t seen Ethan around, have you?”
“Look for cameras.”
“Would prefer to avoid having my picture taken.”
“I really don’t think that will be possible,” she said, looking around at all the people poised, looking for something interesting to capture on film.
Robert laughed and turned back to her. “How you been?”
“No complaints.” Katrina was a friend of one of the guest stars on House a couple months past, and she had been new to the area. He had shown her around the area a few times, trying to get her use to Los Angeles. “Want to go have lunch someplace?”
“Love to, but I told Ethan that I would watch. I’m sure to be quizzed afterwards to make sure that I was in attendance.”
She wrapped her arms around him. “Bet I can convince you to choose me over Ethan.” She stood on her tiptoes and kissed him.
Robert laughed as he pulled her back, then caught the look in her eyes. “You have been flirting with me.” A statement. Things started to fit into place.
“Was I being too subtle?”
“Well, you were.” He shuffled nervously, Ethan forgotten for the moment.
“Oh no, you aren’t seeing someone, are you?”
Yes. “No. It’s just…” he paused, looking at his feet and trying to find an easy way to keep her from questioning and trying to guard the secret that he had with Alan. "Honestly, I am just not looking for a relationship right now. I’m fine." The last was said more to convince himself than to console her.
“But you told me yourself it has been over two years since you had been with someone. Is it me?”
Robert’s eyes softened under her teary gaze. “No, I care about you, a lot.” He took her hand and led her off to one side, away from the crowd. “I’m so sorry. God, this sounds lame, but can’t we just be friends?” He really wanted to tell her about Alan, and it twisted his insides to hold back, but he was not ready to be put on the spot answering the flood of questions about the person who had captured his heart.
She pretended to give his question careful thought, bringing a finger up to her chin. “Yes. I would like that. Would also give me more time to bring you around,” she winked.
He laughed again. “Are you going to see the movie? Ethan did give me two tickets.” He didn’t know why he had kept the second ticket. A vain hope that Alan would be able to go with him? Well, no point in letting it go to waste. He smiled as he led her into the movie theater. As they found seats, he wished that he was with Alan. They were both really busy for the next several months, so there were no planned visits for them in sight. Maybe he could try to give Alan another call later.
