Playing Around

Alan nervously paced back and forth in the living room. He checked his watch again. And again. Robert finally appeared and announced his presence with a laugh. Alan glared at him.

“Relax. You already know these people.”

“I just don’t want to be late.”

“Not even fashionably?”

Alan just sighed and gave Robert another glare.

Robert leaned in and kissed him on the lips, grabbing his hand and giving it a squeeze. “You’ll be fine. Believe me, Lisa always steals the show at these things.”

Alan pulled Robert back in for another kiss. “We could stay in.” He trailed his hand down Robert’s chest.

“Oh no you don’t,” he laughed, catching Alan’s wrist.

They met up with everyone--Hugh, Lisa, Jesse and Jennifer, Omar, David, and a handful of others including the current Patient of the Week, Jeff-at a nice uptown restaurant, where they had a private room reserved. After the welcomes and ordering of the food, Alan finally started to relax.

Alan chatted a little with Lisa at his right and was pleasantly surprised to hear that she was a Vegan. “Us non-meat eaters need to stick together,” she had told him. Hugh had started choking across the table then, and three pairs of eyes glared at him while Jennifer looked confused and thumped him on the back several times.

He answered a few questions here and there, mainly about what his plans were for when he returned to London the day after tomorrow, and then pretty much nibbled on his salad and listened to the chatter around him. He remembered his first day meeting all these people and how out of place he had felt, getting this little glimpse into his lover’s life. He still felt like an outsider, but he felt like less of one now.

Alan was jolted back when there was an eruption of laughter at something Hugh had said. He smiled quickly and laughed along, not wanting to be accused of daydreaming. He felt Robert’s hand on his thigh, squeezing gently. Glancing over, he gave Robert a minute nod and a smile, reassuring him that he was fine.

Then waiter unexpectedly brought the dessert tray around and Alan watched as most of the table ordered fruit or coffee. Alan looked at the rich array of options and picked the creme brulee and ran his finger along Robert's fingers when Robert leaned in to ask if he could have a bite or two.

When the desert was served, Robert waited until Alan had broken through the melted sugar before he dipped his spoon into the creamy center. Alan stole a glance or two at Robert, watching as he slipped the spoon into his mouth and sucked it clean. Alan shifted in his chair, losing track of the conversation, distracted by thoughts of Robert licking him, disappearing across those perfect red lips and getting lost inside his mouth.

Alan shook his head, returning to the dining room, the dishes clanking as the plates were removed. Then the conversation drifted off into what every one had planned for the weekend, happy to have completed an episode a little earlier in the day, freeing up two days for everyone except David.

Hugh grumbled about the need to catch up on sleep and get his weekly massage to get rid of the knots that formed during the week from leaning on the cane. Jessie and Jennifer were attending some event to help rescued wildlife. Everyone all seemed to have activities to keep them busy. All Alan could think about was spending the last 40 hours till his flight as close to Robert as possible. They had not even discussed when they would meet up next, and Alan was feeling a little clingy wanting to maximize their time together.

Jessie and Jennifer were first to excuse themselves, needing to get up early and Hugh teased them about their love nest. They had gone house-decorating crazy after the wedding and it seemed they were always changing it around to get it just so.

Omar and David took off next, both complaining about the length of drive to their homes, and the hope that there was no crazy with a shotgun stopping traffic.

Hugh moved down to their end of the table when the final dinner guests left, save for Lisa, and Alan thought it felt right, ending up with just the four of them and a brand new round of coffee all the way around.

The four of them talked about New York versus California versus London, each one praising and picking apart their favorite city. After about half an hour, Robert's eyes fluttered and he stifled a huge yawn. When he opened his eyes again, he saw three pairs of eyes giving him an amused look. “Well,” Robert cleared his throat, “we should be getting back home.”

Alan stood, quick to agree. “It was fun. And thank you for inviting me along,” he said to Lisa, who stood as well.

Lisa wrapped her arms around Alan, giving him a large hug and a kiss on one cheek. “It was nice meeting you, Alan. Hope that you visit us all again sometime.”

“I would like that.” He turned and found himself wrapped in another pair of arms. “Hugh!”

“I want to say goodbye as well.” And he gave Alan a wet kiss on his other cheek, giving his ass a slap for good measure and winking. “Goodnight, you two.”

Robert had a hand over his mouth, trying to hold back his laughter.

“Very funny,” Alan grumbled good-naturedly, scrubbing at his cheek, waiting anxiously for Robert to head towards the door, so they could make a graceful escape.

Lisa patted Hugh on the back and started excuse herself.

“Cheap Americans,” Hugh grumbled. “Always leaving me to foot the bill.”

Lisa gave Robert a quick hug, whispering to him that she really liked Alan. A light blush cascaded across Robert's face, just as Hugh scrubbed his head, telling him not to do anything he wouldn’t do. Alan laughed at that and Robert gave him a long look.

Robert made a comment about the pound being so much stronger then the dollar, but offered to pay anyway. Hugh brushed away Robert's attempt.

Together they all waked out into the warm summer night and Robert yawned again, muffling the noise behind his palm.

Alan watched the three friends bid goodnight for a final time, then joined Robert in his v-w Jetta, leaning over to grab a quick kiss just before Robert put the car in gear. "Don't think we are just going to go to sleep,” Alan told him. “I have 39 hours till I leave, and I don't want to waste a minute."

Robert reached across and held Alan's hand "Neither do I."
