The Best Part of Waking Up

Lisa watched Alan, but he was too busy watching Robert, small smile on his face, to pay her any notice. And right now, Robert was getting frustrated over a scene they had been going at for a good 15 minutes so far. She sidled up next to Alan. “He’s cute when he’s flustered, isn’t he?”

Alan started to nod, then caught himself, turning towards Lisa. He let the question slide and asked one of his own, “He sure takes himself seriously, doesn’t he?”

Lisa smiled and nodded. She had never gotten much chance to single Alan out before during his last visit and, now that she had, she wasn’t quite sure what to say. Well, she knew what she wanted to say…She bit her lip before casually asking, “How long have you two been together?”

He had been once again watching Robert, but now froze. Slowly he turned to look at Lisa. “Pardon?” He had to have heard her wrong, and damn if his voice didn’t try to crack. Maybe he had been spending too much time with Robert.

She had been trying to find a way to backpedal in case she ended up being wrong, but Alan’s reaction cleared away any doubt she had. “I’ve seen the way you two look at each other, when you think no one is watching.”

Alan didn’t know what to say, so he remained silent, which was probably answer enough in itself. He wanted to flee, but that would look even more suspicious. He had been looking at a point over Lisa’s shoulder, and finally he focused on her. “What tipped you?” he asked after a pause.

“The looks mainly. And he looks happy.”

“Damn it!”

Both turned at Robert’s curse. “Well, except for now,” Lisa chuckled. “How long?” she asked again.

Alan felt uncomfortable. “Well,” he cleared his throat, “we met over a year ago.”

“Met means something else entirely, doesn’t it?”

Alan blushed, something that didn’t happen often. He had no idea how to reply to that. Thankfully, Robert chose that time for a small break and wandered over. “Making nice?” he asked.

“Gotta run to my set. See you boys.”

Robert noticed the flush on Alan’s face right off. “What was all that about?”

“Lisa knows. About us.”

“Alan!”

“I didn’t tell her! She had found out on her own.”

Robert pinched the bridge of his nose with finger and thumb. “I’m never going to be able to look her in the eyes again,” he groaned.

“Are you that ashamed of me?”

The tone in Alan’s voice immediately got Robert’s attention and he lowered his hand. “You know I didn’t mean it that way.”

Alan sighed. “Yeah, I know.” He felt tired all of a sudden. “Look, I’m going to catch a cab back to your flat. See you this evening?”

“No. Please stay? We are breaking for a late lunch. I would like it if we could spend it together.”

Alan slowly nodded. “At your trailer?” he asked hopefully.

“Yes, but no funny business. We only have 20 minutes and I am starved.”

Alan grinned, a lot could happen in twenty minutes, he suddenly felt a burst of energy and followed after Robert with a new spring in his set.

Lisa watched them go, a smile on her face.
