Robert kissed Alan on the lips before pulling away, ignoring the sleepy complaints, and got out of bed. He paused to watch Alan sit up and yawn before reluctantly turning and heading to the bathroom. As he reached to open the cabinet for his toothbrush, an object that rested where the wall met the counter caught his eye. It was a hand mirror, silver, with flowers swirling along the back and down the handle. Robert carefully picked it up. Despite its pristine condition, he could tell that it was old, probably older than he was. He was tracing the patterns with a delicate finger when Alan wandered into the bathroom. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to snoop.”

Alan stood behind Robert and peered over his shoulder, looking to see what had captured his attention. “It was me mum’s,” he said after a moment of silence, then reached around Robert to touch the handle, a gesture he had done often over the years. “It’s one of the few things of hers that I have.” He turned the mirror in Robert’s grip so their eyes could meet in the reflection and he rested his head on Robert’s shoulder. “I use to sit on her lap as she did up her makeup, watching her face in that mirror. Sometimes she would tell me stories while we sat there. The way she had looked in the reflection is how I remember her best.”

Robert watched as Alan seemed to drift far away, to another time, eyes unfocussed. “You loved your Mom.”

“Very much.” He blinked, coming back to himself. “She would have liked you.”

“How do you know that?”

Alan shrugged. “A feeling.”

Robert carefully set the mirror down and turned, sitting down on the counter. He pulled Alan tightly to him, knees on either side of Alan’s hips. “What do you remember about her?” He carded his fingers through Alan’s hair.

Alan paused for a few minutes, silence settling in the bathroom. He finally looked up. “I don’t have many memories, the ones I have I don’t know if I remember because me dad told me or if they actually happened. She was sick for a long time, but no one told me. I did not understand why she moved slower or smelled different. She loved roses and always cut fresh ones to keep in the house, in a vase in the kitchen. When she was too sick to cut them herself, Dad tried to keep them in the house, but it was not the same.” He looked down and rested his head on Robert’s shoulder.

Robert rubbed his back and they stood for a few minutes before Alan finally started talking again, the words carefully and slowly spoken, head still bowed. “I am not sure if I was better off not knowing that she was sick. She was gone often, but then she just never returned. I thought she left me because I was bad.” He lifted his head, looking into Robert’s eyes. “I know she didn’t, but it is hard when you are five and trying to make sense out of something senseless.”

“We don’t know why...”

“I know.” He pressed a quick kiss to Robert’s lips and reached around him to pick the mirror back up. “When I was seven, I thought if I looked in this mirror hard enough I could see her in heaven.” He felt Robert run his hand through his hair and rest it on his neck. “I know it was foolish. The mirror was packed away will all of her things then, and until the big clear out of 2004, it stayed packed away. Just seeing it again reminded me about her. So I brought it home with me.”

Robert kissed him again and gathered him tighter in his arms. They stayed like that for a little while. “She is never gone as long as she is in your heart…Gah, that sounds like a hallmark card.”

Alan laughed and he kissed the top of Robert’s head. “Alright, enough dwelling, let’s head out and do something.”

“Fair enough.” He ran his hands down Alan’s back and rested them on his ass. “What should we do? Any ideas?”

“Let’s just head out and see where we end up.” Robert tensed up a little and Alan laughed hard. “I forgot, you need a plan. What shall we do?”

Robert rolled his eyes and swallowed hard. Closing his eyes behind his glasses he mumbled, “No, no you are right, I can handle this, let’s see where the city will take us.”

Alan chuckled and pressed a heated kiss to Robert’s mouth, “See, that was easy.” He slipped his hand into Robert’s and pulled him off the counter. Alan paused to trace the mirror’s handle one last time before switching off the light and following Robert out of the bathroom.
