On a semi-related note, A friend of mine was just accepted to do Americorps a couple of days ago. They're giving her 3 weeks to get an apartment and start.
Since Peace Corps admission standards won't change (it's damned hard to get in), why are they concerned about applicants' motivations? First, most military personnel have the discipline to do their jobs when asked to, and from my experience they would be considerably more motivated when they aren't in a position to get shot at. I agree that the problem is all in the perception, since as quoted "We are already accused on a daily basis of being CIA agents". Since the military is merely trying to offer another a dangling carrot to fool more people to join up, if people had just kept their mouths shut and kept all this within the recruiters offices, nobody would be saying anything. Now the entire world's gonna think the Peace Corps is just a front for more American subversive intervention.
