Not only is it two-dimensional (I guess being a centrist is just not possible) but its a bit out of date. The conservative line these days is to screw the poor and helpless AND drive up the deficit!

Hmnnn... I dunno about screwing the poor... http://www.showmenews.com/2004/Apr/20040410Busi004.asp

I guess "compassionate conservatism," though, does raise the deficit...

Citing tax data as a sign that the poor aren't getting screwed is roughly akin to telling a guy his job shovelling shit is pretty good because "at least he gets to work outside". Federal programs are being hacked right and left (including veterans benefits) to make it look as though something is being done about the post-Iraq War deficit, since we can't make any of it up by raising taxes without capsizing the whole "hey, love us, we cut your taxes" thing. And "compassionate conservatism" is an advertising buzzword that means very little indeed.

Well, if by letting people who earned their money keep their money, instead of using it to further some third party's Moral Vision of The Good Society means "screwing the poor," I guess it's not hard to understand why people support it. Just as the conservatives need to stop shoving their vision of The Good upon everyone else (and prompting liberals to sound like Ayn Rand about select issues,) so do the liberals need to realize that reaching into everyone else's pockets to feed their pet causes is just as reprehensible.
