Part 1: Proposal
“I can’t do it. I’m not joking, Kyo, I can’t.”
“Shut up, Die. You’re panicking.”
I certainly was. And with good reason, if I may add. I was just about to propose to the love of my life, Terachi Shinya. How many people even meet the love of their life, let alone have them love them back? Shinya and I had been happy for years. I knew he wanted to get married, and so did I, but there was just one problem. Me. I had about as much courage as a squirrel. As demonstrated:
“Of course I’m panicking! I’m about to propose! What if he says no!”
“Are you mental? Die, man up!”
“I am a man!”
“Yes, and that’s what Shinya needs you to be right now.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Look, he wants you to do this, right? He needs you to. Do you want to let him down?”
“No!”
“Do you or do you not want to spend the rest of your life with the most beautiful bishonen you have ever and will ever meet?
“Yes!”
“Well put a damn ring on his finger then.”
Kyo’s advice can be strangely comforting. It wasn’t as if I hadn’t been planning it for months. Shinya had made it quite clear how he wanted me to propose, and I had booked our restaurant for tonight. It was one of our favourites, the one that we’d only been in a few times because of the price, and the one we stared longingly into the window of, wishing we could afford to go in. Of course, tonight we were actually going in, and we were actually going to eat the food and sit at that table by the window and I was going to propose to Shinya and it wasn’t all going to turn to shit when he said no. Was it?
I hadn’t got much time to stand around wringing my hands about it. It was 7pm and I was supposed to be getting ready, as our reservations for the restaurant were at 8. Shinya was in the bathroom, where he had been for the last half hour. I had slipped outside onto the balcony to make a hurried call to Kyo.
“Die? Are you ready?”
Dammit. This was not going to plan. I was supposed to be being the sensible one, the one in charge, the one who paid, held doors open, the one who did things like…oh, let’s say, proposing. Shinya wasn’t supposed to be waiting for me to get dressed.
“Um…” I looked down at my clothes. “I need to go in the bathroom, are you done in there?”
“Yes.” I heard Shinya call back, and I ran to our en-suite. Once inside I locked the door and got on my hands and knees. I reached into the back of the cabinet, slipping my hand around the lube we’d used last night (while smirking at the memories) until I found a packet of old condoms. Shinya and I had stopped using them after we’d been together a few months, but kept them for vaguely titled ‘emergencies’ although what kind, we never gave much thought to. Which was possibly for the best. I reached inside the condom packet and pulled out a small padded box. The bottom half of the box was silver coloured and the side was set with a small silver stone, marked ‘swarovski’. Inside the box was more silk padding with a slit in the centre of the padding. Inside the slit was a ring, cushioned between the silk folds. The ring. I had spent so long looking for the right one. How long is the time limit on perfection? I didn’t know, but I had decided on a silver band with three precious white stones set in the side. They sparkled even in the garish light of the bathroom.
“What are you doing in there, Die?” Shinya called from the bedroom. Oops. I quickly scrambled to my knees and slipped the ring into my suit pocket.
“Sorry!” I hurriedly unlocked the door and went into the bedroom, trying to act casual.
“You were in there a long time, is there something you need to tell me?” said Shinya, frowning. “I mean…if you’re not feeling well, we don’t have to go out.”
“No!” I panicked, not for the first time that evening, and, I was sure, not the last. “We do!” After all the time I spent picking out the ring and plucking up my courage, I was going to do this tonight. I went forward and took Shinya’s long hands in my own.
“I want to. I want to take you out. You deserve it. And I should do more for you! Look at you; you’re beautiful, you’re wonderful, and I should be better. And I’m going to make it up to you, starting tonight. Prepare to be treated like a prince.” I was babbling with nerves, but I meant every word. I stepped forward and held out my arm for Shinya to take, attempting to look elegant but coming off more boy-next-door-goes-to-the-prom. Shinya didn’t seem to care. He smiled in that way of his, simultaneously looking naughty and yet making you want to die with happiness.
“Don’t I get a choice in the matter?” he said in his soft, low voice, slipping his arm through mine elegantly.
“Nope!” I said, smiling widely, “Orders from the emperor are that Terachi Shinya is to be given everything he wants.”
He smiled again. I died a little inside. You’d think with the amount of smiles he gave me he would have smiled me into a happy grave by now, but it was starting to look as though the path to heaven was a long, fluffy road. I was not complaining.
During the taxi ride to the restaurant I tried to stop myself constantly slipping my hand into my pocket to check that the ring was still there. Shinya looked at me curiously but didn’t comment. He looked amazing. He was wearing tight leather pants which showed every contour of his skinny legs. Not that all of him was skinny, and I should know. My eyes travelled up his thighs and I tried not to let them linger at his leather-covered crotch. What was wrong with me? I saw him naked every day. It wasn’t as if I was sex starved. As my eyes travelled up his torso I saw he was wearing a thin white shirt that clung to his toned chest, and the thinnest silver chain was around his neck.
“You look amazing.” I murmured. He grinned. I pride myself on the fact that I am one of the only people that can make Shinya grin. Not his usual small half-smile, where he’s hiding half of himself, but a full on grin, teeth showing, mouth wide.
“So do you.” He said coyly and sweetly.
“Not compared to you.” I said, truthfully. I had tried to look nice for him- I was wearing a black suit with a black v-necked shirt and a long silver cross. I know, right? Black and black. I try, I really do. No-one would ever look in my direction when Shinya was nearby, though I didn’t mind. I counted myself lucky that the beautiful bishonen had ever even looked at me, let alone wanted to move in with me. And now, maybe even…marry me?
Lost in my thoughts, I hadn’t noticed when we pulled up outside the restaurant. I scrambled to open the door for Shinya. This was it. No going back.
