Peoples Part I: The Gren

Last time I talked about some of the general concepts I had when brainstorming my latest setting.  Here's where I start showing you how and why I applied those ideas.

I told you last time that I wanted somewhat of a traditional fantasy setting but at the same time I don't.  I need something that I feel is inherently mine while at the same time I ( Read more... )

I like it a lot and would eagerly play one in a dirtier, nastier, low-fantasy setting. One of my biggest gripes with fantasy in general today is how seamlessly everybody on the good-guy side of the racial divide gets along, with only obligatory elf-dwarf ribbing at worst. I can see myself creating a Gren character that would be a serious pain in the ass to get along with for ye olde Elfe, Humane, and Dwarfish.

Glad you like them.

They're really not meant to be pain in the asses, just relatively unwelcomed.

I would think that "Can Eat Virtually Anything" is a tremendous advantage for a race, or a character. How many armies have failed (and thus nations), because they were unable to maintain supply lines, or to supply themselves from indigenous resources? On the individual level, not needing to spend money on rations or to transport food is a reasonably large advantage. That eliminates one of the basic needs of any survival situation. The ability to "eat" a shelter out of tons of dirt (you didn't say exactly how this works in terms of time) would eliminate another.

Of course not playing Savage Worlds (Though I'd love to try) I don't know what the criterion is for a racial advantage.

You might be interested in checking out the Artemis Fowl books by Eoin Colfe. The Dwarves in this series have this ingesting advantage, using it to tunnel at reasonably prodigious speeds in a manner best left undescribed but similar to an earthworm.

And dangit, why do you live two thousand miles away? I never get to play in cool worlds like this anymore.

AS for the eating thing, it probably doesn't qualify as a racial edge, but I'm putting it in for the bonus vs. poisons. I'm not counting against the build balance as it's not that big of an advantage.

I'll have to check out Artemis Fowl, I've heard of him enough that I should investigate.

And don't you talk as if you're the only one far away! I wanted to play in your setting first, Mapman!
