I still need to actually go read through mine, took me a while yesterday to get the Download to work :)

I've only skimmed the recent release, but I did play an actual playtest several months ago, and at that one some tables used grids and some didn't. So, they may not have covered it in this set of documents, but I *think* the idea is to be able to play either with or without maps.
