Wow, this is so well-written! I love your take on the characters and the way we don't really know what's going on with Regina because we're seeing her through Emma's eyes, but my god, those descriptions of her- 'brutalized hope' and 'bitter hopefulness' and all the rest of the insightful ways you write about her...it's lovely. SO lovely in this broken way that's completely Regina.
There’s an edge of desperation in the question made even more obvious by the failed attempt to hide it away, and she looks so absolutely destroyed by Emma’s little surprise gift THIIIIS. Characters that don't wear their heart on their sleeve, who are so controlled (or 'uptight', lol) and intent on maintaining this flawless facade, but then have cracks forming and some vulnerability showing through....that is one of my favorite things. And since that's Regina the whole way through this, WELL

I love writing Regina without writing her, with only a few scenes from her POV scattered very rarely through Emma or Snow's POVs. I think it just suits her quite a bit, and I love seeing her through others' eyes, honestly.
I like the way you side-step issues that might otherwise clog it up (there's no angst from Emma about Regina cursing the whole world and ruining her life) but examine others that I hadn't really thought about. I dislike the usual drama with these two, mainly because I think its, I don't know, cliche and these women are pretty much anti-cliche to me? Because there'd be issues there, yeah, but the entire outcome of the curse being broken would be more than the formulaic stuff and really be... the stuff too, <3

I love this. I love that Regina is still a bitch but that Emma sees the cracks, now. And I love that Emma can't adjust to the fairy tale world, and I love Emma with her mother. Everything is wonderful, pretty much.
Regina will always be a bitch. because bitches get shit done even if her life hadn't been shitty, she would have had ability to handle her shit no matter what.
And I cannot see Emma fitting into the fairytale world, at least not in 99% of it, honestly. Even in her happy ending, she'd end up more of a nomadic kind of wanderer with a couple of homes scattered around her parents' kingdom than any kind of stay-in-the-palace royalty, yo.
So interesting: "pulling her covers high up to her neck as she does, and it had stung until Emma had begun to understand that it was much an unconscious instinct as breathing was to everyone else."
