I'm just really looking forward to buying the ESotSM DVD on Tuesday.

Me too! I have a feeling that will be the highlight of my week.

Four times in the theatre, thank you very much.
Dangit! I've only seen it three times.

NY movie prices are insane, but they can't keep away from the theaters. I've just become more picky with the movies that I would actually pay 10.25 to see.

Hah! Four seems to be the limit, so far I haven't seen or met anyone who has seen it 5 times. See it just one more time. ;)

Well, unfortunately it's not just 10.25 in NYC. It's also that much in San Francisco and 9.25 in surrounding cities. It sucks in that way. Being too picky with movies sucks, but it keeps you from the bad ones.

Catching up and stuff after being absent for damn near an entire month...

::raises hand::

I am so addicted. I just watched it for the fifth time and this was after driving 180 miles round trip to see it the first three times. Hello, yes. I am quite insane.

Oh and hey, I totally thought of you just as soon as I unboxed the first copy of EW last Friday. :-)

I actually didn't feel like the ending of Garden State was unrealistic - but I did feel like the love story, at the end, was used in a way that didn't really play off the strengths of the story. The love story steps in at the end where the happy ending is supposed to be - except it's a movie about finding yourself through a connection with someone else, and that's a bit of a different thing. I don't begrudge the characters their happy end, but I thought it shifted the emphasis of the story to a place where it wasn't as strong.

Long way of saying - I agree, I loved both movies, but I thought the end of Eternal Sunshine was stronger. That really was a love story - about putting enough value on the all the little stuff that it doesn't matter how it ends. It really had something to say about the nature of love. "Feel the fire. Risk the pain," in the words of another show. :-)

Exactly. Wonderfully put. Also, I think it could almost be construed as an insecurity in Andrew, that he does not believe that he can make it on his own, that he wants to feel safe. And as he says, when he's with her he feels safe.

Whereas Joel takes a huge risk in ESotSM. Like you said, he does what the Spirit Guide wants. He loves, gives and forgives -- he risks the pain.

It's interesting that while both movies end with the couple reuniting, Joel is making a huge risk and Andrew is choosing to stay safe.

Dude, exactly. ESotSM totally does it better. Not discounting GS either, because I also saw it four times, but in Eternal Sunshine, it was not so rushed and smackyouoverthehead as it was in Garden State.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks so. And I'm miserable because I don't have enough money to buy the DVD on Tuesday, and I haven't seen it since March and I want it noooooow! :)

Like I just realized in my comment to ascian3 above, while both movies end with the couple reuniting, Joel is making a huge risk and Andrew is choosing to stay safe.

I completely loved the "So what do we do?" in GS. The first time I saw it, the whole drive home I kept thinking about how that was the most wonderful line to end on. But I think the stronger choice in a film about finding yourself is to risk the pain.

I'm pretending I have enough money to spend on that DVD. I'll probably regret it later. ;)
