Creative Concerns about RPF

Feb 12, 2010 19:38

One of my favorite fanfiction communities just announced a new RPF site. I said, "Huh?" Then I did a search. Google gave me a lot of "Renal Plasma Flow," which seemed unlikely. But Wikipedia came through: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real_person_fiction.

Apparently RPF ( Read more... )

There was an interesting post on rpf & compartmentalization here: http://fairestcat.livejournal.com/449918.html which may or may not be of some help.

Thank you for the link, ficchica! I really appreciated FairestCat's take on compartimentalization & RPF. Also, I could "get" the idea of turning a musician into a character more than an actor, for some reason, which also helped put things in perspective! Learning is fun :-)

Why is THIS where I draw the line?

Personally, I blame being born before reality tv was the norm. I'm not enough of a voyeur to be comfortable with my actors being used as placeholders, for lack of a better word. There are things I don't want or need to know about the lives of my entertainers. (It took years to be able to watch Matt Damon do anything without scowling at him after a few romantic entanglements.)

The other thing is, at a certain point, all you need is a few more nudges to turn an rpf into original fiction. Because unless you really know someone, you can be struck by a thought, inspired, and then take it in your own direction without extrapolating wildly about real people you'll never know.

But it's probably really just a lack of imagination on my part.

"Voyeur" is an excellent word, vikingwriter--the negative connotations of which probably just reinforce my own ook-factor. The Celebrity-as-News thing already seems to be taking over our media to an extent I don't want to encourage it ( ... )
