The Hunger Games

Jan 20, 2017 06:34

I got The Hunger Games from the library yesterday, so that I could start reading it in the evening and have something to anticipate at work today. It's pretty good so far! The worldbuilding feels a little shaky (how big is District 12? How big is Panem? Why are the Games being presented explicitly as punishment and not as an exciting opportunity ( Read more... )

We'll see! I think I'll end up enjoying it even if some things are still a little vague.

Do you want me to tell some background about where and when this is supposed to be set? They sort of explain but not exactly.  The books are very absorbing,  I read the second one very quickly.

I'll wait until I've read to the end of the series, and then you can explain everything I've failed to get! I'd like to see how the worldbuilding sorts itself out for me as a first-time reader.

I managed to get all the way to Part II: The Games just reading on my lunch break today, so.

Yeah, I do think the first-person POV ended up limiting the story as it went along. I'm glad you're enjoying, though!

It's definitely a page-turner. I keep swinging wildly back and forth between total engagement and "hey wait how is this economy supposed to work" and then back to worried suspense. . .

I'll probably have more to say about the POV on Wednesday. I'm not totally sure what I think of it yet.

Enjoy! I read the lot - three books - in three days on my summer break. This series is going to be a classic. I say this as someone who reads a LOT of YA fiction as part of my job. Kids will be reading it many years from now. When you've finished the books, get hold of the movies. They respect the spirit of the books.

I'm pretty sure I will! It's not quite what I expected, but perfect for reading on my lunch break.

I'm saving it for lunch breaks at work, which means I won't pick it up again until Monday. You still have plenty of time! My local library had about eight copies; I don't think it will be hard to find.
