Yay, I'm glad you liked Emma! And I hadn't really thought about it, but most of her books do seem to end with at least one character falling out of polite society forevermore because of their mistakes. Oh Regency England. Kind of a harsh place.

Have you seen the recent BBC version with Romola Garai? I think it's probably my favorite Jane Austen adaptation - I also really like the Northanger Abbey movie but, as much as I love Northanger Abbey, I think Emma has more depth and heft to it. Plus the adaptation is just so visually exuberant.

I haven't seen the Romola Garai adaptation, but I have seen pictures of it! want to watch it soon, but my library has neither that nor Clueless. :(

The only Jane Austen adaptation I've seen are the 1995 Pride & Prejudice (which was my whole family's favorite movie for years) and the later adaptation with Kiera Knightley (which I couldn't get into, probably just because it wasn't my beautiful 1995 confection). And Clueless, but it's been years since I saw Clueless.

I'm not particularly fond of the Keira Knightley version either, except for the actress who played Jane, who was gorgeous. But otherwise the film is a bit of a mess, and I think Knightley is the wrong kind of peppery for Elizabeth Bennett.

I saw Clueless years before I'd even heard of Emma, so it was years later when I read the book that the scene with the photograph finally made sense to me.

I haven't seen either! I was really excited about the first "multimedia adaptation of a classic novel" webseries I saw, but as they've proliferated my interest has decreased, probably just because I keep seeing new things before I've had the chance to watch the old ones and I perversely resent the new things for being too many. Time will tell if I decide to check them out anyway or not.
