I can say that eating less, eating *better*, and exercising more has helped thus far. I emphasize the eating better part since eating fewer ice cream sundaes and french fires still has you eating poorly.

Even Kolata doesn't argue that eating better and well has some effect. As I mentioned, you can control your weight, but apparently in a much narrower range than people think.

Some of those studies have been in my head over the last few years as well. One fearful dramatic offshoot is that this almost makes the case that it's "good for society" to stop having kids with obese or skinny people. ;)

That, I admit, is a consequence that never even occurred to me (or, thankfully, to the author). Scary stuff, those eugenics.

Many "obese is unhealthy" advocates are making insurance, medical, and governmental policies based on that assumption.

Really scary, IMO...

Sadly, probably only going to get scarier as more stuff about the human genome is discovered. (I did some reading on genetics and personalized medicine last year -- really exciting, but also really scary if it's used in the wrong way.)
