Looking for answers about publishing

If everything goes according to plan, by this time next week Daily Breadcrumbs will have reached the end of Deuteronomy, the last book of the Pentateuch. To do this, I have written 75 long essays and nearly 140 "breadcrumbs." In total, I estimate I have somewhere on the order of 88,000 words written for this project so far. I'd look around in bookstores at similar subjects and write down a few publisher names. Write them and ask for submission guidelines. Some take unsolicited stuff, others don't. Or you could get an agent ;)

As an editor, I agree with what reyl said. Bear in mind that as an author without an agent, you have a better chance of getting your manuscript looked at with smaller publishers than the big houses. A lot of publishers have submission guidelines somewhere on their websites. Look at their website/catalog for a while so you understand the kinds of books they actually publish and why your work would be a good fit. Customize your letter if possible according to this.

Oh, one other thing I thought of:

If you're submitting your proposal to publishers, it's also very important to know what other similar books are on the market, and to make a brief argument for why yours is different/better. This shows that you have Done Your Homework and publishers are encouraged by that.
