The Matrix is probably the best one, thanks to how alot of people saw it as "OMG SO ORIGINALS"

Although, as I recall, it had more to do with Gnosism than Plato`s alegory, in the end.

It's pretty close to the Cartesian stuff as well. I think, therefore I am, but the rest of you might just all be made-up. :)

Indeed. I'm actually thinking of another class, called "Reality is not what it seems" (or something like that), that delves into the world of Reality in Question movies and texts. There are a surprising number of them.

Most of Shakespeare theatre will go along the "reality is not what it seems " line too : the Greenland in Shakespeare : town vs. woods, appearances misleading, disguises of the characters, etc. (As You Like It, A Midsummer Night's Dream...)

Linking American Hollywood films with European cultural concepts is quite of a challenge !?

I'm pretty sure there's some fodder to be had in Ghost in the Shell- what makes a person a person? Can "souls" be manufactured? Etc.

Hm... haven't actually watched it, I don't think. I'll put it on my list.

Terminator vs pretty much any "man made life goes evil" literature from Revelations (I think) through Czech Golems, Frankenstein's monster and back up to killer robots throughout the history of science fiction, visiting 2001 Space Odyssey along the way.

West Side Story or Lion King II vs. Romeo and Juliet ?? Is that an idea for you ?

It's a possibility. Oddly enough, it's actually a bit of a closer link than I was intending, since West Side Story is essentially a re-telling of Romeo and Juliet. But the idea has merit, for sure.

yes, it's not very subtle I have to agree. It is a re-telling however the settings, the characters are different, a little journey from Verona to New York.

The Piano vs. Du Bellay's Poetry : "heureux qui comme Ulysse..."

... I actually know neither of those. I'll put them on my list of "to watch" and "to read."

The Piano is a Campion film located in New Zealand, ideas of travel, what is to be a traveller, an immigrant... and Du Bellay's poem : "Heureux qui comme Ulysse" , I can ask Alistair to get a photocopy of the text if you want along with ideas on the author Du Bellay Joachim
