This and That

I had a swell time at yesterday's signing at Comic Book Jones -- I wasn't expecting to be doing much after appearing there just last month for the latest Beasts of Burden one-shot, but it turned out to be a busy six hours. I signed a lot of copies of Eltingville Club #1, a few Beasts issues and a couple of hardcovers. Sketched for some folks and ( Read more... )

Totally dug the new book, Evan! It was well worth my first trip to the comic book shop in months and definitely did not disappoint! Looking forward to the next issue whenever it comes out and seeing how the whole shebang ends in San Diego!

The new book is absolutely fantastic! Although I love your 'cleaner' art style, it's great to see the densely packed, angrily cross-hatched Eltingville style return.

SPOILERS:

The focus on Joe, Bill and the comic shop location for the first part was nice and fresh, and then the battle was hilariously epic. It was cool to see references to Twitter, dickwolves, fake geek girls and Agents Of SHIELD too.

Looking forward to the ending!

Thanks for the comments on the issue, folks.

Re: the art style, Eltingville is, I hope, the last time I'll be drawing this dense and "ugly". It's a drain and takes too long and while it's supposed to be suffocating and I like the overall effect, I don't really enjoy working this way. But it's the Eltingville tradition so I worked it to death for #1. #2 will be less oppressive, for the most part. Hopefully.

So the change to your more recent style will reflect the time-shift for them, that's really nice.

Only if my OCD allows it. I'm not holding my breath on it working as planned. But when Eltingville's done, I hope to be moving forward in regards to an attempt at a cleaner, less dense style. Maybe even with color in mind. Or maybe just I'll just write and not draw for a while. Jury's out, just like my back.

Evan, I really enjoyed the book. I've been reading you since Instant Piano and the Eltingville Club has been consistently a highlight of my comics reading. I'm sorry to hear that the grand finale is delayed, but I know that it will be worth the wait.

Eltingville #1 really is the grand finale, in a way. #2's the epilogue. A little mellower. Only slightly unhinged.

There's a lot of conversations you could have about shops and ordering habits and overstock and indies and actual comic book comics. But y'know, the fact that the store ordered any of my stuff and supports my projects to whatever degree puts them above most stores and that's enough for me. If every store in the Direct Market only ordered four or five copies of my work I'd be selling more than I do now, there are relatively few shops out there who order the bulk of all the indy/small press/art stuff. Of course I'd love to see your shop order more, or at least re-order. And I believe in hand-selling, which is how we did business at the two shops I worked at and how many good shops increase their business and widen the net. But relatively few shops order anything that isn't the top 100 books, and that's their right, and that's the reality, and that's also one of many reasons why digital and Amazon are doing very well (for good or bad). Amazon doesn't give a crap about me, but they sell everything of mine in trade, and they offer reviews ( ... )
