Nov 17, 2011 23:56

I stumbled across this while cleaning old files off the computer -- a very rough first draft comic strip pitch to Mad about the Spider-Man Broadway musical debacle:

This would have been great. Love Bono hugging the globe.

I am profoundly distressed to discover that this musical even exists... I would have rather had the Carrie musical. n.n

Not only does it exist, but it was in "previews" for months while they "retooled" (i.e. actually made it safe for the actors to perform all the aerial stunts that Taymor had built into it).

You didn't ask for it, but here's a hysterically funny piece of actual concept art from the show:

That's a pretty good rough. I'm sorry they didn't go for it, but they probably thought it was too New York (though in the rest of the world, we were following this story too) or would be dated by the time the story printed. This happened to me. I did a story about the show, and by the time it showed up in print (a lead time of one month!) Julie had been let go ...
"Sorry, we're out all out of Spider-men." Game called on account of no more Spider-men.

It would have been timely if they ran it, the story was ongoing, and it was national news because of the players and the accidents and the character. Mad ended up sitting on it as a possibility for the end-of-the-year 20 Worst issue, but in the end went with a different take on the subject. For all I know the recent events of 2011 has bumped it entirely as it's been pretty well gone over and now forgotten (save for Taymor's recent lawsuit making headlines). It happens. Show biz.

Haha, I just sang it to myself and had some hearty laughts (and it even scanned to the original tune, just about!) I then looked at the notes below and got more yuks out of 'If Vince McMahon produced this play / there'd be congressional hearings today'.

Do you have the original still? Would you ever put something rough like this in the store or on eBay, or would that feel weird?

I sometimes put roughs on e-bay. I couldn't price it myself, e-bay allows me to figure out a price on my art if you know what I mean. I was going to just throw it out but maybe I'll toss it on e-bay with something else. I dunno.
