This And That (FCBD Edition)

May 06, 2011 14:44

I'll be signing stuff at Comic Book Jones tomorrow for Free Comic Book Day . At least I hope to sign some stuff. One never knows. I expect to show up sometime around noon, for those of you who give a toss.

I will have some work featured in a FCBD giveaway, by the way -- a three-page Bart Simpson strip Sarah and I did will be in the Bongo freebie.

You don't see too many M&C shout-outs, thanks for sending that along.

A few months ago I mentioned something about a project very briefly in a short interview, and I got my knuckles rapped for spilling a very small amount of beans. Gently, but firmly. Funnily enough, the same person who took me to task just mentioned the same exact "secret" point of business in a short interview I saw recently. This proves nothing, it just makes me laugh. I guess we're fortunate that no one cares, as it doesn't involve any DC or Marvel characters.

Then again, when I have worked with said characters, people still didn't care. Cue cricket SFX.

I'm with you, but like I said, these days there are clear-cut cases where people are hot to jump the gun, get out the word, pick up a few ego points and crow about something, and it undercuts the attention the project gets when it is actually released. And then there are the perennial big-mouths who are always telling you about the BIG MOVIE BASED ON THEIR CHARACTER that somehow never actually gets past the piddling option stage. You don't want to look stupid. Unless you are stupid, and you can't help yourself, I guess.

And eventually you get to talk about it, I'm not working on Secret War on Retailers or Blackest Sales Report stuff or whatever the latest epics are that CHANGE EVERYTHING every few months -- but it does get frustrating. People are human, some, anyway, and most of us would like to tell folks what's going on.

Haven't had to sign any non-disclosure clauses for anything in comics, though, as far as I can recall.

Made a point of picking up the Bongo Comics Free-for-All with your strip in it today. Also confirmed that Beasts of Burden will indeed be the subject of the next Comics Discussion Group at Vintage Phoenix (that's in Bloomington, Indiana, if anyone's interested). The meeting will be on May 19 and today was the perfect opportunity to get the word out about it. I hope we get a good crowd.

Very cool! Always nice to read about s shop or library selecting BofB for a discussion. Hope someone shows up. At least you'll have things to read if no one does.

I picked up the latest MAD Magazine for the kids & myself & really dug the illo you did for the Things You Don't Want To Hear From A Marriage Counselor.

"Sam Kinison On Women" was an inspired choice for the bookshelf.
I'd read that. Was that your idea?
(That would make a fun series of strips, come to think of it..)
Also liked the Yankees & BoSox attire of the happy couple.
Peace sign vs. pentagram was also a great choice.
Nice job all around. Thanks for the laughs.

Just thought I'd mention some work of yours that is actually out in the world right now. Since we CAN talk about that...

Glad you liked the Mad piece. And thanks for buying the magazine. And yeah, all the gags and titles in the illustration are mine. It was a really straight-forward illustration job so I threw in some extra stuff to help sell the couple's incompatibility and the counselor's imbalanced mental state. I like to pep up the articles whenever I can to give the reader more things to look at, that comes from old Mad tradition, Will Elder, et al. It's pretty wild to be able to take that influence back to the source these days as an actual Mad contributor.

I'm working on another Mad gig, a small one for the Fundalini section, I can say that. But that's all I can say.
