The Simpson's Summer Shindig #2

Jun 02, 2008 12:30

I wrote a 15-page story for the latest Simpsons Summer annual, "Down in the Dumps", which is about Bart and his cohorts heading into the Springfield dump to track down a missing accessory to his Extreme Raging Radioactive Man figure (rendered impossible to get after a lead paint recall). It's sort of a Treasure of the Sierra Madre thing, with, y' ( Read more... )

Sounds a bit like what you'd said the 2nd episode of "Welcome to Eltingville" would have been. Do any of the writers of Simpsons comics ever get kicked upstairs to writing for the show? Particularly writers with experience writing for animation? Know anybody like that?

If I were speaking this out loud my voice would have been steadily rising in pitch.

Hi Evan,

Strange request you can feel free to ignore:

I'm reviewing seasons 3 and 4 of the Incredible Hulk for PopMatters (lucky me, right?), and I thought it'd be cool to use one of your old Generation Ecch! strips as one of the images in the review; the one wherein the Gen-Xers ignore all the world news but react with horrified indignation to news of Bill Bixby's death.

Is there any way, against all odds, that you happen to have a scan of said strip handy?

Again, if not, no worries. Thanks either way.

Cheers,

-Monte

If we weren't so busy I'd put something together for you, but that material is pre-digital for us, and the original is long-sold. Sorry. maybe someone has a bootscan on-line somewhere --? Torrents whatchamakoozie stuff --?

Now really, you should have held off on selling the original on the odd chance that, many years hence, an unusually charming and attractive fan would seek to use it to supplement his Incredible Hulk review.

Shame, sir. Shame.

This is how I feel now:

Hey, lemme continue this vein of off topic awesomeness. So this Saturday you and Sarah'll be at MoCCA. For some reason, some wackos declared June 7th (and all subsequent first Saturdays of June) to be Drawing Day. Basically an arbitrary holiday that's supposed to celebrate artists and illustrators by demanding they draw more on that day and having it visible for the world to see. You game? If not, I'll pester you for a con sketch when traffic is slow at your table.

Yeah, that's what artists need, a day of someone telling them to draw more shit for free. I'll be drawing free shit all weekend at MOCCA, is that good enough? Do we get a cookie? Where's Idiot Day? Oh, right, every day is Idiot Day. I don't mean you, btw. I'm tired of This Day and That Day and Whatever Day. No Music Day. Secretary Day. No Pants Day. Not Funny Day, Bad High Concept Day, Marketing Day, Light News Day. Leave Me Alone Day, that's what I'd like. Everyone Fucking Behave Day. One day where no one has to worry about getting jacked up or bothered or ripped off.

Drawing day. No thanks, I can't participate, because I'm already going to be sketching. So come by for your free sketch, but don't ask me to draw, because I'll be sketching. Wink, wink.

Hi Evan

John Delaney here!
I had an absolute blast working on "Down in the Dumps with you. The script made me laugh out loud as I was reading it so I wanted to bring the same kind of visual intensity to the art as was conveyed in the fantastic writing!
Hope we can work together again real soon!

Peace
John

John -

Just caught your post. Thanks for checking in. I didn't even know the strip was drawn so getting the comps was a real (nice) surprise. I'm working on an 8-pager I hope to get in soon, and I try to pitch a story to Bill after I finish one up, so hopefully I'll some other material in you could work on. Thanks for the panels and pictures and keeping the background gags in and all. The rats the size of dogs looked great, and vice versa.

Thanks Evan and thanks so much James
Wow its become a love fest and I for one couldn't be happier to be in the company of two incredibly talented kats as yourselves.
That 8 pager sounds great! Here's hoping I get to do it!
