Twenty years isn't very long

Today is the 20th anniversary of the Berlin Wall being opened up, and people were talking about it on the radio. I started thinking.

I remember in the sixth grade, everyone in my class got a country to do a report on. Lucky me, I got East Germany. I was frustrated for weeks because I could find all sorts of information about West Germany, but ( Read more... )

Local libraries, even university libraries, had scant little important information on any country behind the "Iron Curtain." I know because in college I tried to do research on planned economies and ended up discarding the project because it was so difficult to get publications I needed.

The ones I did get were very difficult to read, although I was always amused by the "Department of Erections", how they translated what might have been "Department of Construction" or some such thing.

I feel better about my lack of information, now. Whew!

I would be an excellent candidate to work for the Department of Erections!
