It's that time of year again!

In case you’re new here, I'd like to introduce you to an intrinsic feature of my personality: I hate Christmas music. I usually write an annual rant about how much I hate it, except for last year when it was 60 degrees out and Paul McCartney was not to be found on any radio channel. Luckily, this year, we’ve already had snow, and I’ve purposely ( Read more... )

I loathe "The Christmas Shoes" with a passion too. Luckily, I have learned to identify the first few notes, so the instant I realize it's starting, I can change the station.

Being new to my hatred of this song, that's a skill I've not yet managed to master. Hopefully, I will be quick about it, since it's probably the most annoying song I've heard in years.

Man. Christmas music is terrible. I only like it when I am singing it to myself, not when some creepy probably-pedo guy from the 1940s is doing it. My friend who drives me home from school loves it, and has subjected me to it since mid-November ever day.

Keeeeeeeeeeeell meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

People either seem to love Christmas music or hate it (though I suspect the hating has more to do with the people who love it inflicting it on us in November). There needs to be some sort of middle ground, where people can agree that sometimes, Christmas music is not necessary.

I've managed to prevent my friends from inflicting Christmas music on me by threatening not to invite them to my annual Hanukkah party if they play it in my presence (this goes doubly for 'Feliz Navidad,' the Great Satan of Christmas music...if that's possible). Fortunately, I've trained my friends to be addicted to latkes, so this works out. Unfortunately, it doesn't extend to all of the other places that play Christmas music, so I'm forced to go about muttering "Target/Macy's/etc. is not invited to my Hanukkah party" under my breath.

Mmmmm...latkes. Target and Macy's don't know what they're missing.

Oh, how I love reading of your hatred of Christmas music, lol. I tend to like some (it's not Christmas at our house until my Mom's pulled out her Carpenter's Christmas album), but I do stay away from quite a few songs.

At work (I'm a sub teacher at a Montessori school in the Infant/Toddler room) we get to sing four Christmas songs at the school's open house later this week. Our songs of choice: Frosty the Snowman, When Santa Got Stuck up the Chimney, It's a Small World, and Feliz Navidad/Hannukah. Ugh, I'm so over singing those songs.

I seem to have tapped into something with "Feliz Navidad" this year. But I have to ask, when you say you sing "Feliz Navidad/Hannukah," does that mean that it's one song combining Navidad and Hannukah, or two separate versions, or how does that work? I mean, I can see that singing "Feliz Hannukah" would work, because it's the same number of syllables, but the whole English part seems like it wouldn't scan.

If you don't feel like talking about it, please just ignore this.

lol. At our school if we are going to sing Christmas songs then we have to sing Hannukah songs. The head teacher in our room decided to add Hannukah to Feliz Navidad. Basically we sing the regular version of the song once and then the second time around we just subsitute "Feliz Navidad" with "Feliz Hannukah" and sing, "I want to wish you a Happy Hannukah". The rest of the song stays the same.

Ah, so it is as I suspected. Well, at least most of it works with the tune.

This year, I decided to boycott the airwaves. Because I LOVE Christmas music--but not the AWFUL pop bastardizations on the radio today. I DID discover a station that I'm loving--it's an XM station called 'Christmas Traditions' and it plays only recordings from 1940-1960. For me, that's absolutely perfect, especially because you get some variations on the TEN songs the radio plays (for example Sinatra's "Christmas Waltz" or Lousi Armsrtong's "'Zat You, Santa Claus?").

40s-60s Christmas music is some of my favorite too. People just seemed to have nicer voices in those days, or maybe I just like Christmas music with orchestras rather than synthesizers. Sadly, I don't have XM Radio, but I have some of what I like in MP3s and CDs.
