WARNING: KINDA POLITICS AHEAD

Jan 16, 2005 20:09

I don’t actually want to get political in this post, but I am talking about politically related things. Hence the warning. What I want to talk about is Armstrong Williams, so if you’re right-wing, and can’t stand to see anyone left-wing talk about a conservative commentator no matter how apolitical she attempts to be, you might want to skip this ( Read more... )

Well, Uriel, I didn't mean to apologize for my post. I'm really very firm in my beliefs, so I don't apologize (hey, if no one else in politics ever feels the need to do so, why should I?). I just put the disclaimer up to prevent arguments.

News is certainly becoming a disgrace. Though I hope realization in the population will help mitigate that. It would be nice if people actually gave a damn for more than the six seconds someone is telling them they're being manipulated.

I most certainly agree with the point, and it may be a factor in what my orignal post was considering. We don't expect in depth investigative reporting anymore because of this obsession with soundbites and highly distilled messages. Because people don't expect well researched news stories (esp. on television), it's even easier for organizations to get away with VNRs and information supplied by PR agencies. Journalists and reporters just aren't as important as they once were because we don't spend any real amount of time listening to them.

I totally agree with you, Evadne. Normally I skip over political stuff like this, but SNL was making fun of Armstrong Williams last night, so I just said "hell with it" and read it. Don't apologize for your posts - you're entitled to them, yo. :)

See, I need to watch SNL more often. I always mean too, but then 12:30 comes along, and I've totally forgotten.

I didn't mean to apologize. I guess I'll have to adjust my disclaimer so I sound firm, but unwilling to argue.

hey its a free country... anonymous January 17 2005, 10:12:35 UTC
i like your viewpoint here and i'm glad you put it into writing because i'm always having a hard time conveying it to my mostly republican/conservative friends and family....they seem to believe i'm conservative when i'm a moderate leaning towards liberal.

I personally don't think you should have to warn people before you go political...this is your LJ not theirs.

Cheers,
~Victoria

Oh, I only warn people because I don't like to argue on-line. I do it when I have to, but it's not fun. It's just as well if people don't read viewpoints they simply don't want to hear. My LJ won't change anyone's mind.

It's difficult putting how you feel into words, especially when trying to explain an alternate viewpoint. People expect certain things from you because they are friends with you ("of course you're conservative; I'm conservative"). I'm glad you understood what I meant and appreciated it.

Actually, the only apology I saw was for using CAPS LOCK. The rest of it read like a disclaimer that what follows is outside the usual envelope around here, liberal in its orientation and you're not going to be arguing about the fact that it's politics, and liberal at that. On with the post....

[shrug] Only thing I would have added was that metadiscussional posts about "politics is [fill in blank]" or "liberals are [fill in blank]" would be roundly ignored, because the issue is Republican purchase of American opinion and everyone's purchase of the news.

Which I find unsurprising, but if people aren't going to vote in this country (when was the last time even half of those qualified were registered and actually showed up to vote?) then the government may as well go to the highest bidder.

I would rather people voted and paid attention to the media they consume/purchase/etc. Though, honestly, I don't expect that. It would just be nice to have a vague trend in that direction.

I think it was rather smart to put the disclaimer up, so many people are offended now-a-days when other people try to give there opinion about things that they don't agree with. Everyone has a right to there own unique point of view, some people have to learn how to deal with that.....Whoa that was differant, I usaully don't talk like that, ^_^ sorries!!

Hey, so serious.

I suppose it's better to be safe than sorry. Some people simply don't read everything before declaring their opinion, or worse, your opinion for you.
