I agree that the story has it's faults, but overall, it's pretty good. The scene with Sazh did have me on the edge of my seat since I had just spent the previous chapter getting to know him and Vanille better, and to have this happen just made me (and Gene, my boyfriend) do a huge WTF. But I could understand it since he was at such a low, having just seen his son turn to crystal and learn that the person he had been running around with is the cause of this. I could understand that he just didn't care anymore, despite having gotten his Eidolon.
It wasn't that I didn't believe it for the character, it was that I didn't believe in Square's willingness as the storyteller to kill him off. I didn't believe they would go through with it; I saw through it as an attempt by Square to make viewers freak out, but without the repercussions of actually, you know, having a character die. They wanted to have their cake and eat it, too. In good storytelling, you don't fake a character death as a stunt. But then again, if this were good storytelling, a faked character death wouldn't be so completely obvious before he even pulls the trigger. =/
I love watching you hate this game. I love watching you hate the storyline, because I keep hearing people going on and on and on about how the gameplay may suck but the story is worth it. I refuse to believe these things are true because I honestly believe the people that worked on this game are a bunch of lazy assholes. So. Thank you. For being the cynic--I'm tired of this Square-Enix cult.
The story's kind of crack-addled and disjointed, the gameplay is... perhaps too kind, but it did well by the amateur that, well, c'est moi - OKAY FINE IT SUCKS I ACCEDE TO THIS SUCCESSION OF ENTIRELY VALID CRITIQUES but I still love the characters to itty bits. All of them. And the basic concept of the story is also pretty neat, even though it, uh, might need salvaging.
Vanille is obnoxious as fuck. I'm sorry, I tried, and it was going pretty well at the beginning there, at least so long as I pretended I couldn't hear her thoughts, but then she stopped being so weird and amusing and I really can't stand her anymore. And Sazh ceased to be a unique character and became a walking empty trope as soon as his angsty flashbacks and standing around brooding took precedence over anything actually happening in the present plot. I sympathize with him, but I can't love him as a character because he doesn't feel like one
( ... )
Haha, yeah, Vanille had convinced me I wanted to eat her face at that point. I'm also coming at my love for the game from the perspective of the end of it, and from hence I'll shut up.
I guess what's there is still enough for me to love it? I AM STILL SORRY IT IS NOT AN EXPERIENCE YOU ARE ENJOYING. I hope the catharsis is at least fun.
