usually self disclosure is frowned upon in psychiatry. It's a bit looser for kids, but there is still held to be that invisible wall so that the psychiatrist can be a blank slate. But sometimes a little revelation can be a good thing for a patient

With something like this, it's intensely personal. It just happened for her, and her family didn't even know. She needed that support. Kind of like usually you don't touch patients, but I still gave a hug to one of my patients after her husband died. It's being a human being as well as her doctor, really.
