It's judicious use of personal info. I mean, sharing the fact that I'm a gamer (or hell, even having anime wall scrolls in my office) is a way to connect, as is sometimes talking about social media and how it's used. That's easy with kids.

With something like this, it's intensely personal. It just happened for her, and her family didn't even know. She needed that support. Kind of like usually you don't touch patients, but I still gave a hug to one of my patients after her husband died. It's being a human being as well as her doctor, really.
