Spring Break has totally confused my kids about what day of the week it is

I am about ready to give up on tofu. I made the spinach and mushroom lasagna out of the Thug Kitchen cookbook tonight, and because it's a vegan cookbook, instead of cheese it had a tofu ricotta filling. Not a fan of it. Alicia liked it, but the rest of us were all pretty much meh. Especially for the amount of work involved. Totally not worth it for ( Read more... )

Has Alicia watched any super scary movies before and been okay with them, or would this be her first time watching something like that? I'm just wondering if her definition of super scary is the same as yours. ;-)

I don't think there's anything wrong with introducing her to the classics, and you're less likely to be freaked out by something you've already seen, probably. I'd start out with something like Nightmare on Elm Street myself.

No, she hasn't, which is why I don't understand this overwhelming desire to start with the heavy stuff. Well, yes, I do. She jumps into the deep end with everything. I've tried some of the more suspenseful scary stuff like the first two Alien movies, and she says they're not scary enough.

There's a couple of marinades in the cookbook that I think I'm going to try. It gets sliced thin after marinating and then either fried or baked. And I don't mind tofu in Asian soups, mostly because it's such a minor component. If there's a recipe you love, please feel free to recommend it. :)

I am not a tofu fan. Except for a few Asian dishes I avoid it.

As for scary movies, why do you have to watch them with Alicia. My daughter Naomi went through a scary movie phase too, but outgrew that a long time ago. She liked the Alien set of movies. I saw the second one in the theatre and told Naomi that I would not watch another one of the series. What about The Shining? I let Naomi and her father watch that and we went into another room and read a book.

Because Alicia keeps begging me to watch with her. It's been going on for a year now, and I tried the suspense scary route with the Alien movies and that wasn't enough for her. But The Shining is an excellent suggestion, thank you! I've seen that a couple times now without too much trauma so I could sit through it again for her.

There are two basic models of scary movie. The "slasher" and the "haunted house." Personally, I don't get much out of slasher movies (Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween) and find the haunted house model a lot scarier. Poltergeist is a good example of haunted house. But the last movie that really terrified me was The Others with Nicole Kidman and Christopher Eccleston.

The thing about tofu is it's pretty much flavorless. It's a texture, not a taste. So, if you want it to taste good, you have to put a yummy sauce on it. If I was going to make up a tofu dish (Chopped style), I would slice firm tofu about a 1/4-1/3 inch thick and saute it in olive oil with lots of onion and garlic. Then you could mix it with sauteed cabbage, or kale.

Tofu taste like anything you put it in, so you have to be sure to put it with something tasty.

But if you don't care for the texture, I would simply forget about it.

We can take or leave the texture, to be honest. We don't hate it, but anywhere it's been a central component of the recipe that I've tried, it just hasn't contributed enough to make it worth repeating. I'm hoping one of the marinades the cookbooks has will be a winner. It slices firm tofu like you suggested, marinates it, then fries or bakes it. We'll see.

I'm not a fan of the slasher movies either, so I already tried the more suspenseful route by showing her the first two Alien movies. I've got the original Poltergeist on the list of possibilities, and I'll look at The Others as another one. I just wish she would stop asking for us to watch something at 10pm at night with all the lights off. :P
