Yay! Legions of True Hearts! *g* But you knew I was going to say that, right? I can't help but compare every William I read (and I have a bit of a thing for him) to yours. They mostly come up lacking :)
I can't write with music on, but the TV, on the other hand, I can ignore if I'm into what I'm doing. But that's probably because I'm not a heavy-duty TV watcher. It's on, if I'm interested I'll keep track of what's going on, but if I'm not, it just becomes background noise. I always have something else I'm doing while "watching" even if it's a show I really like - hand sewing, crossword puzzle, grooming a dog, or - most likely - doing something on my laptop. Maybe not writing, but answer e mails, scanning LJ and DW, checking Facebook for post by my oldest son that make me leave comments threatening to change my name... there's always something. I can't just watch it without having something to fiddle with.
Oh, I can do other stuff while watching TV, just not writing. I think it's the immersive quality that comes with writing for me. I can turn my brain off from doing manual stuff with my hands, like knitting or something, but that's pretty much it. I really wish I could do both. I'd get so much more done then! :)
I think it my case, it has to do with the fact that I'm not actually watching - I'm just in the same room with it. If I'm into what I'm writing, that takes my attention away from everything else. I don't write that much at home, actually. I find my husband's presence inhibiting. Fortunately, I have a job that requires me to sit in a quiet room most of the day. Where 15 or 20 years ago I was going through a couple of books a week, now I have my laptop out and instead of reading, I'm writing. :)
Yeah, no noise for me, either, or I'm too focused on the music, even if it's instrumental. I can edit with TV in the background, but not draft. And then, a lot of other little noises bug the hell out of me if I'm trying to write - ticking, buzzing, mumbling, etc etc. The only noises that never bug me are the AC and the quiet hum of my computer.
