17 - Titles - Are they the bane of your existence, or the easiest part of the story? Also, if you do chaptered story, do you give each chapter a title, or not?
Easy, no, but for my longer stories, I love the search for coming up with the perfect title. I play with the thesaurus, I do google searches when I hit upon a phrase I like, I merge and twist words until I find a combination that sings to me. Oddly enough, I rarely do this with short stories. I'm not sure why. Sometimes, the title comes before the idea. "Rhapsody in Oil" was that way, as was "Beg the Liquid Red." But 9 times out of 10, I can't even start a story without having the title first.
For my longer Buffy fics, too, titling the chapters always happened before I wrote a word. I found a theme and ran with it. Big band song titles, Sting lyrics, lines from Keats...I've used a wide variety. Probably the only reason I don't do that anymore is because of the time involved. I don't have it in abundance any longer, and would much rather just get to writing than spend a week just doing titling. No, I'm not kidding about how long it took me. I did go back to doing that on the story I was going to write for the Merlin bigbang, but when Haven ran away with me, that got shelved anyway. I don't know if I'll get back to it or not.
But...love titles/titling. Love titled chapters. I might bitch and moan about not being able to title something, but deep down, once I've hit upon the perfect one, I love it all.
