Graduations are dumb

We got some news today about Alex's graduation. They moved it out to June 22, and they're doing it with the kids and no audience, and they're going to livestream it for people to watch off-campus. Personally, I think it's a horrible idea. Alex's class has 594 kids in it. Not all of them will show, but most of them will. That's a lot of kids. They ( Read more... )

But .... but ..... there are no words! What if some of those kids have the virus but only mildly or are asymptomatic and pass it on. All those families will be at risk. Holy crap.

I don't know why I'm surprised by these people. The holiday weekend has people out in droves. I shudder to think of what the numbers are going to look like in two weeks.

With the virus still a big threat, it seems crazy to organise any gatherings that big. But ordinarily, I would go to my own graduation (well, I did - only my SO there, though) but what I don't get is how kids in the US even seem to "graduate" when they move from primary school or nursery. That's what devalues the graduation from university, IMO.

I've always felt that the graduations before high school were even more pointless. At least with high school, some kids aren't going on to college, so that's it. But those other levels are just reasons to celebrate mediocrity.

And considering how many people are out in huge gatherings this holiday weekend, I've decided most Americans are just stupid. So I shouldn't be surprised by these parents. Just disappointed.

I could see something like that. That would be far more acceptable than what they're planning or advocating now.
