I went to Porto for a cruise down the Douro river. It had a really cool river area. It was amazing. They make Port wine there and down the river there are tons of vineyards everywhere!

I just met a girl on my train from Amsterdam to Rome and she spent about 5 days in each country. She said Portugal is like the hidden gem of Europe. She said not many people in Spain spoke english (not even in Barcelona!), but most people spoke it in Portugal. She couldnt stay in Lisbon because Euro 2004 is there right now (the European World Cup), so they went to the beach and the town starts with an L. I saw her pictures and they were amazing. She was telling me that they went on a booze cruise and it stops in all these grottos and caves. Sounded pretty neat to me.

Hope this helps. I'm just passing information along!

I was in that exact town where there is the famous so-called booze cruises in portugal. It's an amazing little city that I got stuck in (by choice!) for the past 4 months (town: Lagos). I just returned home 2 weeks ago, and I am planning to move there by the end of April next year. I traveled all over Europe, and there is just something very special about Portugal. You will have no problem speaking to anyone because lots of people speak english as the portuguese are used to the backpackers that come through, but you still wont miss out on the culture. I recommend staying the the Algarve region, which is the southern seaside coast from the point of portugal, all the way to spain. You can visit spain too even if you chose portugal! Trains are VERY cheap, same goes for buses. I spend some time in only Seville, spain..but have been all over portugal. Pricing is about the same, but I found that I paid 40euro a night in a hostel in spain compared to the 15euro a night hostel in lagos, portugal. You will meet so many people in ( ... )
